This was a blended course, and I did so because i was dreading taking it. Jim is both passionate and intelligent. I didn't like so many of the readings we had to do until he spoke about them, he opened up new views, and his passion transfers into his ability to teach, but more so it made me want to learn. Fantastic man.

I took a blended course Fall 2012. James is passionate, and it transfers through his ability to teach. I was dreading this class, but it quickly became a class I looked forward to, and was sad it had to end. I will 100% take any classes offered by him. Intelligent, engaging, passionate. Camosun is lucky to have him.

Jim is enthusiastic about what he teaches and is a pretty nice guy who will clarify any questions if you ask him. That being said there were more than a few people surprised on some of his questions on the exams as we hadn?t gone over any of the material in class. Also he is one of if not the hardest marker I have had in my three years at Camosun.

I thought the class was the most boring thing ever. It was hard for me to pay attention, and I often left halfway through. If you're not that into english, I advise you not to take his class.

Still to this day the best teacher of my whole degree (4th year now). Seriously take any class of his you can. He's brilliant at shakespeare, and Huxley and all of it. TAKE TAKE TAKE! You WON'T regret it! And go to see him for help!

I enjoyed Shakespeare, which says a lot. I was nervous coming in, but he made classes enjoyable. The objective tests were really hard! So make sure to get enough clarification from him on what specifically you'll be tested on. Expect class details not pertaining to the plays to show up... and watch out for footnotes that he draws your attention to!

Jim was definitely the best professor I have ever had at Camosun, with his unique approach to teaching English. He was very passionate about literature, and has an AMAZING amount of knowledge of past and present works. If a book is half decent, he probably has read it and memorized quotes. Highly reccomended.

Jim was an awesome teacher. You could really tell that he loved what he taught. He got very into the works and helped to pull out lots of little details. Didn't really pull punches on tests and was very clear with what he was asking. Mostly concerned with overall themes and comparisons of works. Insightful and exciting class. Very knowledgable.

Brilliant man, infectious passion. Made each class unique. Good with identifying a novel's important concepts -- which prepares you for any testing. Only issue was spending 3 classes reading a paper of his, then given a summary after. Relevant stuff, but too much class time spent on it. Likes minor characters. Fair marker. Overall, excellent prof.

Dr. Sexton is my hero! He's so "scholarly"! His notes, course outlines, and assigments are out of control. He made up questions WHILE the test was in progress! In the beginning I found it so annoying but by the end I loved it. I would be one happy camper if all my teachers were like him! Keep 'em guessing Sexton! haha

Best teacher I have had at Camosun. I was particularly impressed with his selection of reading material, as it was not the standard fare of modern British literature. Jim is highly recommended.

The WORST teacher I've ever had!! Before taking his class I was really interested in Shakespeare and after his I'm-always-right interpretations I HATE it! This guy has delusions of grandeur and thinks that he's teaching Masters level classes. He is rigid in his thinking and his teaching!!

This guy treated students like they were 12. He hated people getting up for the bathroom, leaving early or disagreeing with his interputations of Shakespeare. If you want a Military structed class, take it

Despite his disorganized ways, Jim is the best teacher I have had at Camosun. His knowledge of English literature is IMMENSE. His erudition might be intimidating, but he is affable and willing to help you out on essays and assignments. I wish I had him for ALL my English courses.
