Dr. Brown expects excellence and scholarly thinking and she makes no bones about it if students fail to measure up. Her brand of teaching definitely involves some tough love but if you suck it up, set aside your ego, and listen to what she is trying to tell you she will turn you into a better scholar and a better English major. Best professor ever.

In all honesty, Brit Lit will drain the life from you. However, it is important and necessary as the essential fundamentals of literature. Dr. Brown is very tough, but as she should be. She wants you to be the best, buts she will not let you off easy. She will help you if you go to her and ASK for it, but you have to do the work. Learn from her.

I absolutely love Dr. Brown. While her class is quite difficult, she is extremely passionate about her subject and is a sweet lady--you just have to look past the objective scholar in her. Quizzes are detailed and hard - study for them. Exams are actually easier, I would say. The paper isn't bad, I did fairly well. Overall, a great professor.

As a person she can be kind when she wants but as a teacher she tends to make students feel like inferior idiots. Her quizzes can be hard but her exams are fair. Once you get through first semester she is a lot nicer (mostly because she has weeded out the weak). Just stay strong

You read a lot of great stuff however she often crams in the reading and does not prompt discussion. Additionally she has views that she touts as though the majority of literary critics agree (I'm looking at you Eliot) with her when that isn't the case.

She is tough and scary but a great class. If you can get past the first half of the first semester where she tries to scare off as many people as she can, you will have a great time and learn alot. Also go to anything that involves her cooking: its PHENOMENAL!!

Janice Bonita Brown rocks! I double majored in history and English... graduated 4 years ago and still think of her often. Learning from her was a privilege. She's tough, but passionate about her subject, and that makes all the difference. Hint: If you take Brit Lit as a senior, she will LOVE you. I had it much easier than my younger classmates.

Brown is a tough straight-shooter. I took my 1st of many papers to her for help; she said it was immature, then listed ways to improve both writing and thinking. I got the paper back with an A- & many notes praising where it improved & noting where it hadn't. If you'll swallow your pride & work hard you WILL get better, & you may love her as I did.

Dr. Brown has a reputation for being hard-nosed and mean, but she is a dedicated teacher, knows her stuff, and cares deeply about her students. After four years as an English major, I have no qualms about declaring her my favorite Grove City professor.

Dr.Brown is a very smart woman and I learned a great deal about literature from her class. She was really helpful with paper writing and even though I didn't get a great grade in her class I enjoyed having her as my professor. Hard work but she's awesome!

It's perfectly possible to provide a challenging curriculum w/o taking some of the cheap shots Janice takes. That John Donne quiz? Ridiculous. And it may be a weed out class, but why are we trying to scare kids out of the program? Why not just educate? And she'll literally write your thesis for you, tell you its good, then rip it apart. <-Witch

Dr. Brown is good as a teacher, but she is not a very sympathetic or encouraging person. Recommended if you are somewhat determined and resilient.

She is a very tough teacher and her lectures are very dull and hard to pay attention to. I went to her office for help to improve my grade and she was not very helpful at all and told me that I would fail her class. I would never recommend her to anybody for a humanities class, which should not be super hard to pass since everyone must take them.

Honestly, she's a good teacher. Everything she does is make you a better student in the long run. People fail to realize that they are in fact in college now, and that there are higher standards for preformance. If you're bitter about having to take a difficult literature class, switch out of the english major or attend an easier college.

I'm not afraid of her, and I did fairly well in her class, so this isn't because I am bitter or lazy...but...she's frigid, and she has been known to make students cry. The class is interesting, but she has an extremely inflated sense of self worth, and of her own intelligence.
