Very sweet lady, though she may not seem like it at first. Attendance is important, and she expects the work to be done for each class. She is extremely helpful both in and out of class, and any "picking" on students in class is just to help them along, and shouldn't be considered embarrassing. Her exams are fair and she is a fair marker.

At the start of the semister she seemed nasty, but loosened up a bit after a few weeks...she expects u to work alot...very hard marker and gives very hard tests. Not the worst ive had though.

Jan is a wicked prof, if you're good at french. I got an A, did the course straight out of french immersion. I love how organized she is and the fact that she corrects very in-depth. She cares a lot about attendance so don't miss class!

I don't understand how anyone finds that she embarasses students. If you can't take it, you need to toughen up. Dr. Black is an excellent prof. She knows what she's talking about, she's always willing to help and she teaches and lectures excellently. Highly recommended

Jan is an excellent prof! If you do the assigned work and go to class, you should have no problems with her or the course. As for the interviews, she gives a list of topics before hand, so if you prepare you shouldn't have any trouble at all. I learned more in her class than in six years of French immersion.

read whatever is listed in the syllabus before every class. she doesn't really teach, you're expected to know everything beforehand. she almost made me cry in my interview. she didn't post her office hours, but i'm too scared to go see her anyways. she reminds me of Jeckyl and Hyde! sometimes she's sweet as pie... the next minute RAWRRR!!

Janis is the best french prof by far at MUN. She is very well organized and very nice. Yes people you can get on her bad side by not going to class, so JUST GO. News flash: EVERY teacher is a hard marker not just her. Believe me I have done many french courses at MUN and she is just the same. If you don't understand smthg go to her. she is helpful!

I really liked Jan. She can be a bit harsh, and a tough marker. But overall shes fair and explains concepts really well. I learnt more this semester than I did all of high school french! If you can get her as a prof, take full advantage.

Jan was awesome, I really liked her class and she has a really good way of relaying a point. Attendance is not mandatory, however if you don't show up on a regular basis she's not going to cut you any slack. I would recommend he to everyone!

Jan made this course super easy. She lays everything out for you and as long as you are in good humor, is great to get along with! She doesn't ACTUALLY embarrass anyone, she just wants to ensure that everyone be correct. Loves her!

Not a helpful prof at all! She has absolutely no trouble in humiliating a student in front of the entire class. She makes you feel inadequate and as if you should not be doing french! Stay away if you can!

One of the best teachers I've ever had. If you didn't know what was going to be on your tests/exam it was because you didn't come to class! Extremely clear and helpful, gave examples exactly how they would be expected to be reproduced on examinations. Be prepared for class though.

very good prof, makes you want to work harder to fix the tiniest of mistakes. Hard marker but if your not just doing it for an elective it will be worth it in the long run!
