This class is a piece of cake if you have taken AP chem before. That being said, dont rely on old knowledge to get you through. You should still come to class and study if you wanna do well on his tests. Tests arent super difficult but memorizing the information is not enough. Gives lots of practice problems for the test and hosts study sessions!

Overby is one of the funniest and most understanding/relatable profs. I was nervous to take the course (two semesters of gen chem in one semester), since I didn't take AP Chemistry in high school. But, Overby did a great job explaining everything in a memorable way; he does reviews the night before every test; and he will give you partial credit.

As a student who didn't take AP Chem in high school, this class was extremely difficult. Overby expects the honors kids to already know a lot of the basics of gen chem. If you are in the honors college and did not take AP, I would not recommend him.

This was a relatively easy class. Overby is pretty funny, in a weird way. You learn to like it. The tests aren't bad as long as you study. He doesn't take attendance, but you really need to go to class. He doesn't use the book or powerpoints, so you really need to be in class for the lecture.

Overby's arrogance is wonderful once you accept it. He clearly loves what he teaches. He co-wrote the textbook and is clearly competent. The only class Overby ever cancelled was when he had to be in another state to help write the chemistry GRE. His Monday molecule of the week has nothing on his Friday joke of the week.

He is a boss. I don't write many reviews, but Overby deserves one. CHEM511 was a really interesting and fun class, you really learn a lot about chemistry! Overby is a great professor - explanations are perfectly presented, work level is not too much, and if like me, you love chemistry, this class is an absolute must take!

My favorite professor at the college. He explains things the best. If you listen and if you work out the problem sets, you'll make good grades on his tests.

Overby definitely has a sense of humor when it comes to explaining things (ask him about f electrons). Overall this class is pretty easy and the exams are straightforward, doesn't use the text whatsoever, but I found it very helpful when I missed class (often). Hands out a study guide before every exam which is very helpful.

He is super helpful and extremely clear when teaching. He answers everyones' questions very well. There is really little homework except for weekly online homework which isn't that bad. He doesn't take attendance and puts what we did in lecture on his website so you can look it up in the book. Great guy, take him if you have to take chemistry.

I HATED chemistry before coming to college after bad experiences in high school. Dr. Overby is a great teacher and makes chem more interesting. He gives out study guides for his tests and has online review sessions the night before them to help you review anything you do not understand. He also has a great sense of humor which makes class more fun.

Lectures are very clear and organized, take notes but he posts notes online after each chapter. Tests are multiple choice and problems that need to be worked out. They are tough, but if you do the problems he suggests, the old exams, and homework...you'll be fine. Also, he has an online study session right before the test - helpful!

He's a great teacher and really funny. Tests are hard, but they aren't random at all. He goes opver everything in class and offers a lot of outside help. The final wasn't hard at all, because it was a standardized test from the American Chemical Society. His exams were so difficult that once you got to the final, it was a breeze!

A truly great teacher. He has so much energy and he loves what he teaches. The tests can be hard but he's very helpful outside of the classroom. He does online study groups the night before the test. The online Aris homework brought my grade down slightly since answers have to be too specific.

WONDERFUL! Has such a sense of humor that makes you want to come to class. Very clear explanations and LOTS of example problems. Practice problems given before tests and he's always available for out of class help. As long as you pay attention and study the test will be fine. Gets to know students well. Lots of funny jokes and stories!! Dr. O rocks
