Dr. Boyd is great. As long as you have an open mind and act like an intelligent, degree-seeking human being rather than a reactionary philistine with no appreciation for art or human achievement, you will learn a lot from her class.

This class is awful. She does not teach many of the significant things in the time period from WWI to the present. She prefers only academic music. What she wants is academic papers that can be published and not be a good help in the process. She wrote a nasty email to our class after we submitted our papers telling us how bad they were.

If your interest is in American Music, this lady is for you. If you are studying Western Classical music, you are out of luck! I was astonished by the lack of information I received in her classes. More weight was given to Billings and Chadwick than Haydn and Mozart. In 2002, she tried to convince me Elliot Carter was dead!! At least she is nice.

Dr. Boyd is wonderful. She insists that students treat music history like any other academic class, but the work she demands is well worth the effort. She really cares, knows everything (or will work hard to understand what she doesn't know) and is so fun!
