Comment:

The readings and her approach to the topics explored are very interesting. It's an engaging class environment (discussion-driven, but she leads it in such a way that it's actually purposeful and not just useless input). She's very understanding and participation marks can be gained through online discussion.

Comment:

Dr. Burwell is brilliant, kind, hilarious, and a fantastic educator. She expects the best; come with the material read and be prepared to back up your assertions. That said, she's happy to accept alternate viewpoints, and she'll do whatever she can to help you out. By far the best grad course at Ryerson (& among the best I've ever taken).

I had her for a senior seminar, so there was a lot of reading but it was varied in form and for the most part, interesting. I personally liked her lectures but they sometimes felt kind of long, however, she marks well and doesn't make me afraid to participate in class! Plus she's just generally friendly, which makes her classes enjoyable.

She is great. Definitely very intelligent, knows the subject well, and has a good sense of humour too. It helps if you participate in her class, but she provides good feedback. I loved most of the material in this course.

Comment:

Not a bad teacher. She'll prefer you if you are actually interested in English and speak up in class. Overall I would take her class again. HOWEVER- Whether I spent 20 minutes or 2 hrs on an assignment I received 75. I received 75 on every single assignment in her class. So I'm not really sure where her grading comes from.

I disagree: she's quite the democratic teacher. She still seems like a student herself, willing to take reasonable assertions from her students. No classes for reviews. Fair marker - if you put time and thought into your work, higher mark for you!

Burwell has disproven some ignorant assumptions that I have held about people who work in the area of identity politics; I believed that they work to create a safe arena for dialogue - a validating rather than disparaging environment. Instead, her hostility and her self promoting nature has taught me that even the marginalized can get off on power.

well, jen's one angry lady, and she takes it out on select students (mostly guys...she seems to take it easy on the girls)...extremely funny and extremely intelligent, but any benefits of those qualities were, to me, totally ruined by the rampant and totally unnecessary scorn/sarcasm/judgement/arrogance she exhibited toward myself and others

She is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is funny, irreverant, and knows her stuff. She is not afraid to offend, or confront, but is always fair. People who don't like her are gernally stupid and weak willed.
