Class is almost all discussion, and we had a group project which wasn't that hard. Lots of reading, but I never kept up and just read everything before the final and got an A. Pay attention in class and you'll be fine. Midterm and final aren't as bad as you think, he grades pretty easy.

Totally a discussion class with readings to prepare for every class. He doesn't facilitate discussion though, he usually just chooses on random students and asks them questions. The assignments and group project weren't too hard, but the midterm and final were pretty dificult. If you study hard for them both you should be fine.

If I could pick again, I'd try to get a different teacher. Downes is ok, but his grading techniques are very subjective. And if you get a B or better on the paper, he won't really give you any points back for the re-write, so don't botter unless you really need points. He also gives random little projects like "write a poem" that aren't on syllabus

Great professor. Class was almost all discussion. He started class every day by asking if we had any questions and if we had enough to fill the whole class that's all we did. A solid amount of reading, but it is a lit class. There was only one paper and two exams, both of which he graded easily. He also has blackboard hw that boosts your grade

He is an amazing teacher. He is actually concerned with how well you do in class. His class involves greater participation, but that makes it more fun.

A really nice guy-- he wants you to do well and participate. His class is a little more involved, with group presentations and scenes read aloud in addition to normal papers and tests, but it's interesting and not all that hard. I'm glad I took him.

Really good professor. He's vague about what he wants from essays (which bugged me at first), but it ended up being a good thing because it gives you the freedom to write about what interests you. You also have reading every MWF night and you're required to participate in (usually interesting) discussions of the material on the next class day.

Nice teacher, but difficult class. I feel like I didn't gain anything by taking this class, and the fact that we had to assign our own paper topics (that he rarely approves of) made the class even harder. Apparenty he used the same syllabus as an honors class for our class. Overall, nice guy but I struggled all semester to make an A!

A nice guy and a good teacher. It felt like we had a lot of assignments (like presentations and poetry readings) but nothing too bad. Always seems interested in student comments and observations about the stories.

He was actually pretty good! He likes to call on you in class so try to be prepared but he wasn't very mean and never gave quizzes. I'd say I put in an average amount of work into this class and came out with a B so that's a win. He's really a pretty nice guy. Take the class.

Horrible! Don't take him! Lit is my best subject and my first semester I made an A with no effort but not with him. He grades unfairly and gives no insight into how to correct your mistakes. I asked for help in understanding his comments and got none! I ended up with a high B but deserved an A. Dont do it!!

I really liked Dr. Downes. I always went to see him before major papers were due and he was extremely helpful. You have to be prepared for class though and attendance is mandatory.

I enjoyed his class and hopefully will have him again. We spent most of our time in the textbook and did several short papers and one long research paper. I ended up with a B in the class. He can seem kinda intrigued with students answers, but always makes you think. I recommend his classes for English majors.

It's a bit hard to know what exactly he is looking for on assignments. He also assigned a lot of reading, more than we ever got to in class, which seems like a bit of a waste. However, over all he's a very nice guy and truly excited about what he teaches.

I lovelovelove Dr D. He's really easy-going and not afraid to admit a mistake. You better like English for his upper levels, but otherwise just do the work and you should be ok. A tip: an easy way to get on his good side is to hang around and chat a bit if you ever visit his office.

I found the class only slightly challenging; I still made an A though. He was even willing to change the due date on a paper for me because I told him I wouldn't have time to do it. The reading is required and if there isn't enough class participation he will give quizes before each class.

If you ask him how you're doing he'll tell you- just don't expect him to ever tell you. Yes you do have to be in class so if that's not you get another teacher. but if you come to EVERY class, raise your hand ONCE A WEEK, and know the stories you will do find. hint: go online to get summaries of the stories, that'll help.
