Jim is an absolute gem and one of the most down to earth professors you will ever meet. The discussions he has in lecture pretty much give you everything you need to know for the exams, plus they are very entertaining. I plan to take him again in the future for my Upper-Level Elective requirement!

Not only was Jim Thomas engaging and hysterical, quirky and in-touch, he also taught me things in such a relatable way, that I've managed to retain and apply his lessons 10 years later. As a Biochemistry major, I was interested in philosophy but didn't need it, but it quickly became my favorite class and I wish I had taken more classes with him.

Took PHIL399 - Philosophy of Humor. Do anything you can to take this class, it was by far the most enjoyable class I've ever taken. Thomas is literally hilarious (he could easily do stand up) so you'll actually WANT to go to class. The exams and papers are easy if you have well-informed opinions on things. He also seems to care about students.

First class with him today. Non-stop jokes, had the whole class LAUGHING hard. Too early to discuss the course, but according to friends that had him, great discussions and lectures. If you follow the material and come to class (optional), you will do fine.

He's a really great guy and a great teacher. Sometimes he can get a little too silly and derpy and takes a few minutes to get back on topic, but he's really very good at what he does and you can tell.

Absolutely my favorite professor at UMBC. You will have a hard time controlling your laughter some days, his stories are insanely funny. There's 3 exams and a paper. If you show up and actively listen (which isn't hard) you should get at least a B. Take a class with him even if you don't need to because it just brightens your day. Dude is the best.
