Comment:
Took MESA 250 as a GE, and I would not recommend that route because it was a lot more work (3+ hrs hw per class) than I expected. However, he was a great, inspirational teacher and my view of Islam and the world has changed for the better. I have learned a lot and am very glad I took this class. If Islam isn't your thing though, it is a challenge

Without a doubt, he is one of the best professors at BYU. He is focused on the development of each student by creating an environment where you are stretched and develop deeper analytical skills. He is incredibly helpful with his feedback. He requires A LOT of his students, but that expectation always gives way for greater intellectual growth.

I knew nothing about the Islamic culture before this class. I have learned a lot but the class is pretty difficult. There is at least three hours of reading before each class and it is not very interesting, most of it is off of a computer. Lectures drag on and the tests are hard. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are very interested in Islam.

Toronto is really interesting but he really requires a lot. It is a lot of work if you want an A in his classes. He is particularly crotchety in his grading. Avoid him to save your GPA.

I loved Dr. Toronto. His lectures were always very interesting and I never wanted to miss a day. I had very little interest in Islam prior to the class but his enthusiasm and knowledge on the subject was infectious.

Loved the subject matter of this class, and you can tell Toronto loves it too. Lectures dragged on somewhat, though, and there were several of us who felt the essay grades were rather inscrutable and arbitrary.

Toronto does not give clear expectations about writing assignments until after they have been returned. He is very picky about the way you write and will dock points if not written exactly how he wants (you have to read his mind a bit). He doesn't know the material very well nor do the TAs. You're really on your own for this one! Likes pop quizzes

His papers are really complicated he didnt do a very good job of explaining exactly what he wanted which made it hard to write for him. Lectures were very unstructured but some people like that. I like him as a teacher but you need to take minimal credits when taking his classes.

I also had Toronto for ARabic 451, 452. He doesn't mess around and expects a lot of good work but he's very kind and always willing to help. Very approachable and very knowledgeable.

I loved this class, not because it was easy, but because the material is so interesting. It isn't too hard, but requires much reading and some memorizing. Prof. Toronto is a really cool guy.
