READ THE SYLLABUS. It has specific dates and instructions for what is due and when to turn in for credit. Get ready to read like 35-50 plays (depending on normal or summer term). Tests are straight forward, but spelling counts. Play Analysis paper due at the end of the semester, start thinking asap. BUT he is wonderful. Taking his other classes. :)

Dr. Jim Volz was my instructor 20 years ago at CA State University. He was organized, well-read, impassioned, and-- most of all--kind. He had so many interesting things to share and I always loved coming to class. He always treated us with such respect, and I was always struck by that. Truly decent-Dr. Volz, I never forgot your small kindnesses

There are too many professors in the world of academia that have no business calling themselves "teacher". But Jim Volz is a shining exception. He has a gift and a passion for teaching. It's not an easy class, because you have to be willing to work. But it's hard to fail because he gives you all the tools you need to succeed. Best teacher I had.

He's one of the best profs I've had at CSUF. He's really knowledgable about all aspects of theatre, and he teaches you everything you need to know to do well. The only way to not pass is to not try at all.

It's obvious that Jim really likes teaching. His enthusiasm really rubs off on the class. We were all getting excited about the subject. There's certainly work, including alot of reading to be done, but it's a good learning experience.

One paper, two tests, two quizes- need to study lecture/ books/read plays to get an A on tests. Took it in summer. Very organized, funny, extremely nice, excited, made me want to go to Greece Now! Test easy compaired to Smolen's, but still need to study a lot. They are straight forward, unlike Smolen's- she trys to trick you! Take Jim!

TAKE HIM FOR THE HISTORY CLASSES. Other teachers are not nearly as good. He really cares about his subject and his students. He's not easy but you will learn alot and enjoy doing it. There are only a few people in this Department that should be teaching and he is one of them.

If it is at all possible, take all of the world theatre classes with Jim! He is easy to understand and his lectures are interesting. He includes a lot of video clips and photographs so that the class does not drag. His tests are straightforward and very easy if you come to class and do the readings.

Professor Volz is tough...but not too tough. This class was great. I learned a lot and he makes the lectures interesting, by mixing it up every 20 minutes of class...which really helps in a 2 hour 40 minute class. I haven't taken any of the other World Theatre teachers, but it's my understanding that they don't compare to him.

If you actually want to learn something in college, take a class with Dr. Jim Volz. He's nothing like any of your other mindnumbing, monotone, confused professors. He has a lesson plan and actually sticks to it. He knows and understands the material he's teaching you, even better he's interesting.
