The exams are difficult-MC/short answer/fill-in/mini essays. BUT this is one of the most fascinating classes I have EVER taken. She gives extra credit only to students who are not passing-I was one of em but I ended up passing. If ur an Anthro major, this class sets a foundation & will prepare u for ur transfer school. Take if u r willing 2 work!

Awful teacher. This woman loves to hear herself speak and beware her tests have nothing to do with the readings. rate my professor failed me once and this teacher was it.

She is one of the best professors I ever had in SMC. Her lectures are EXTREMELY interesting. I love it when she goes telling her story about her ethnography about a tribe she lived with. The tests are hard but if you memorize every word from her lectures and read the assign books you'll do great. She even gives an extra credit assignment for those

This is one of the best professors you will ever take! She is retiring next Spring Semester 2007, so take her if you can... she not only makes you want to become an anthropologist, but also her friend! She is an amazing woman and I would recommend her class to anyone, and guarantee that she will enrich your life as a human being on this planet!

I cannot say enough about Joan. This was one of the best classes I have ever taken. Extremely interesting topics. Tests are not hard if you study and take good notes. Be sure to attend every class or else you might miss something important. I got an A by following this advice. And FYI, her last semester teaching is Spring รข€˜07 so enroll now!

With a varied reading list and many personal anecdotes, Dr. Barker's class was always engaging and fun. Tests are relatively easy given that they are primarily multiple choice and fill in the blank. Additionally, Barker alerts students to possible examn contents during lecture as well as spending ample time on review.

She is a very intelligent and interesting professor and her lectures are interesting too, but she is very biased and only imparts her views on things rather than giving the whole picture. The exams are very difficult and there is an extreme amount of reading and material that she does not go over in class.

She enjoys the sound of her own voice. Lectures are filled with copious examples that make it difficult to get her point. Her tests are very, very, very difficult. Excessive reading assignments. Not an easy class, but if you pay attention and do the readings you can get an A. Do not try to take her tests without doing the reading.

Awesome lady. Difficult, yes, and will sometimes go overtime and make you late to your next class, but worth it because she's the wise, funny grandmother you wish you'd had. One of the most broad-minded teachers I've ever met; will teach you a lot about what a narrow box we live in.

One of the three best teachers I've had in my whole life. She so interesting, I felt like class was storytime in kindergarden. She is challenging and to do well, you have to learn the material. Take ALL the classes she teaches if you can get in. The African Culture class was brilliant. I love her.

Don't believe the lies; the only reason to take this class, outside of IGETC, is to guarantee admissions to USC. That decision is up to you. UCLA used to have her as a professor, and she claims she hasn't change the course since. Yet, UCLA is tougher to get into, so you'll make the right decision

Joan is wonderful. She's interesting and funny, and what's more she's always ready to help. A genuinely good teacher, and an experienced and dedicated anthropologist. Pay attention during lectures - thorough notes are a must! As for tests, review the textbook readings, but memorize the lecture material! A great class. Definitely recommend.

For students with learning disability or non anthropology major. She is a great Professor but her midterm took two classes and her final were 19 pages long and a lot of reading. Also her is very helpful but think about before taking this class.
