Comment:
Dr. Baker beleives that future virtue can erase past sin meaning if the mark on your final is the highest mark you have gotten all year that is the mark you will get in the course. he gives the questions to the final ahead of time he gives out like 20 question only 5 will apear on the final and you choose 1 of the five to do so it is the easiest A.

Comment:
John Baker has a very particular way of over-explaining things to a point where the meaning of the sentence is lost. He will fill up a slide for something he could have clearly and fully explained in less than ten words and struggles to create clear and concise definitions. I have had to resort to YouTube and other sites to learn the material.

Arguably not the most gifted lecturer, but he is so knowledgeable that you will end up learning tons from him anyways. Review the notes he provides carefully; they are ON POINT. If you are serious about Philosophy, I highly recommend taking a course with him. I Would not be half the student I am today if not for what I learned from Baker.

Comment:
Baker is not easy, but he will bring clarity and rigour to your thinking. The content, readings, and assignments are all difficult, but grading is fair. Some exposure to metaphysics, epistemology, and (especially) logic is highly recommended before taking this course, as he frequently uses certain technical terms and basic concepts from them.

Comment:
This class can be difficult going into because the subject matter is so meta and so unfamiliar to many students. If you don't understand something, go ask him in his office hours, he's happy to explain stuff. The best method of note taking I found was to just type and transcribe everything he says, it's easy to get lost if you zone out for a minute

Comment:
Baker is an encyclopedia of philosophy and very intelligent. This can work to students' disadvantage, though, as his wording can be confusing and hard to understand. Analysis assignments require tons of worktime, but he is a fair grader and provides lots of feedback. Very nice and amusing. Tough class, a lot of work. Suggest attending regularly.

Comment:
Baker is incredibly self-centered, but in a rather innocent way. He's a fair marker and for some phil students the right prof. He thinks he is making the argument easier for you by putting it in his words, but he doesn't realize that his own material makes very little sense for the non phil-elite. Take it, but don't be surprised if you feel lost.

Comment:
Not sure what all these negative reviews are about. Baker is neither narrow-minded nor pompous. He said several times in the course, "Your working hypothesis is: Baker's talking crap." He was alwaus open to other ideas, and always willing to go over something again or talk after class to help clarify things. A great, funny guy and a great prof.

British, but actually rathah nice. Fair marker and very aware. Enjoys poking fun. Enjoys swimming and wearing suits. Yellow ties are unprofessional. Godly in knowledge, but funny sometimes. Respects and admires his wife very much.

This guy is one of the best prof's I've had. It's hard work getting A's in school and people that complain about John can't be doing the work required. His analysis assignments taught me invaluable philosophical techniques. Whoever said that he is pompous must have a chip on thier shoulder about some poor grades.

I took his 313 class, liked it, aced it. Anyway, don't use that a predictor for 449. If you want to be subjected to 3 hours of the most narrowminded bullsh*t ever week, go ahead take it. If you want to keep your sanity and not have a million pages of reading a week... run, FAR FAR... FAR... AWAY!

Most pompous prof I have ever had. He was so arrogant and condescending it was unbelievable! I was really interested in the class and some good discussion but all it was was him spewing on and on and on...Don't ever take a class with him, you won't be respected.

I'm not sure why people disliked Dr. Baker. He was interesting, helpful, and sparked my interest in law. I worked hard for the class, but no harder than any other of my classes and pulled my higher grade. I would definitely take another one of his courses.

Ever walk into a movie half way through and been completely lost? Well, this is what his lectures feel like. The course was interesting on a whole, but the lectures themselves were dry and unorganized. Good luck understanding his overhead writing, his cursive is attrocious. BUT, he gives summaries.
