The most memorable teacher I've ever had. In History of the World Since 1914 the man literally PERFORMED World War I... He loved his subject and wanted you to love it too. The world is a better place for him having shared his enthusiasm for history and for teaching.

Had the Rev for two classes back in the '90s. A brilliant, entertaining guy who was one of the best reasons for attending Emerson back in the day.

Attendance technically not mandatory, but if you want to skip your exam it is. I will never forget the vocab words I learned from him or any of the insane stories he told. His was the only history class I knew I would not be doomed to repeat. He was my Coffee in the morning.

In 16 years of classes Rev. Coffee was among the best teachers I've ever had. His ability to relate current events to 1066 and beyond was uncanny, and to this day, I remember words like "Apodictic" from the latin to speak for oneself, thus Self-Evident" Apodictic! Once, I was having some trouble with a paper, and he let me call him at home so he could talk me through it. If you're at Emerson, make sure you take at least one John Coffee class. It should be required.

His History of the Bible class was super engaging and interesting. He is a walking encyclopedia of information, and always ready to give an extension or help you out with extra credit stuff. He is helpful, yet very intellectually challenging. John Coffee is a MUST TAKE professor at Emerson College. Do it before he retires!

I had Rev. Coffee for two classes. The first was Western Civ where I first got a good taste of his fine, acidic style. Even better was a class on political cartoons in American History. This was a small class--maybe ten students--and having the opportunity to interact with this pithy Emerson legend was tremendous. I'm glad to hear he's still teaching.

This is the professor you hope for. He is my hero, I think. I minored in History simply because I wanted to take every class he taught. He is Yoda, I believe. If you know how to spell supersede, accommodate, and privilege, you know what I mean.
