100% recommend buying the "Broadview pocket guide to writing", it's not necessary but it helps a lot if your writing skills aren't the best. You don't need to attend lectures while reading the book but he helps give you a different perspective.

The feedback given is excessive and difficult to read. He makes it unclear what is being asked so you kind of have to figure it out and hope you get it right. I don't recommend if English isn't your first language because he never discusses how to better your writing skills.

Lepage has a pretty polarizing effect on people. He goes off on a lot of weird tangents, he's not always easy to follow and he's a bit of an eccentric. But all the same, I think he's absolutely fantastic (my favourite prof so far). He is incredibly knowledgeable (maybe not useful knowledge... but knowledge nonetheless). Give him a try!

John is a nice guy for sure, but he doesn't explain what he's looking for and so the entire course is just you trying to figure that out. His lectures are long and don't usually have much to do with the material. He also isn't great with helping answer any of your questions.

hE wonders around one minor point for hours. Never helps you prepare for research. If you international student, he pre-grades and assigns you poor grade before you hand in your final work. this is evident from what he said to a friend of mine.

The classes sizes are small, so don't think he won't notice if you miss a class. He is always on time, pretty funny and just an enjoyable prof especially if you are someone who finds English dull. It's pretty impressive the details in books he can pick apart. Nit picks on some minor things though -- if he mentions it in a class remember it!

John has a knack for giving thought-provoking lectures. He combines his wonderful sense of humour with his critical perspectives on pre-1700's literature.

He talks a lot. He knows his stuff. Sometimes he'll dive off the deep end and digress from the actual topic, but trust me, any class with him is definitely something to take. He is passionate and crazy in a good way. :)

I really enjoyed taking an English class with John. Although he tend to regress a bit, they always seem to have an underlining point that relates back to his lectures. He was very helpful with essays. My papers always were returned to me with many marks on them, but he was always there to help me fix my mistakes. He is a great teacher!

While I think he may be more suited for a career as a sandman, he does know his stuff. He is more suited for upper level classes and should definitely not be teaching in the 200's. He comes to class empty-handed and lacks any kind of structure. I've fallen asleep countless times and the midterm was entirely random. Avoid until 3rd or 4th year!!!

I can definitely see where the first year students don't get him. He is definitely more suited to higher level courses. I love the open flow of his class, and could talk to him for hours! He is brilliant and takes challenges well, and really makes you think. Provides beautiful insights, and likes to engage people in class.

John is one of the nicest and most open-minded profs...If you don't like to think for yourself don't take his class cause he's not going to hand it to you. He's totally open and the most approachable prof. i've ever had. He can be hard to follow but just stick with him because he really knows what he's talking aobut and he appreciates effort.

Lepage is a very helpful teacher, if you want to write a good essay make sure you see him before you write your draft! He's very smart and really open to individual discussion, just make sure you've read the material before you ask for help!

Undecided about his teaching. Hilarious, but speaks without reason @ times. Extremely critical and a hard marker. Yet, he can be very kind and inspirational. Don't take his course if you enjoy a fast paced enviroment.

This is no reflection of my efforts: English 12, didn't do it. I challenged the exam, didn't study, and got 96%. English 11 with a rather touchy teacher, 95%. His class, C+. Marks harder than he deserves. He's about as exciting as a burning stump. He rambles on monotonously for hours, and is a much less cool version of a washed-up Dumbledore.
