To be blunt, I did not find this class to be an enjoyable academic. Unless you are enraptured by the subject matter, I would not advise taking this class. I still am disappointed that I paid for such poor lecturing.

Very intelligent man; very dry sense of humor. Willing to engage in discussions but lets you know he's way smarter than you. Extremely vague assignments. In a class of 15 he didnt know names. Lectures are scattered and he seems unprepared/doesn't care most of the time. If you don't understand the material or aren't a favorite, you're out of luck.

An extraordinarily intelligent and clear professor. He's very considerate of even the most juvenile questions and concerns, and makes sure everyone grasps what he's teaching before moving on. He's also has with a strange wit, and is often the only one not to laugh after he exercises it. If you have a chance to take a course with him, do it!

To the previous person's entry... I just figured that he was having a rough year. A few classes were cancelled for health/medical reasons. I too felt like he was unprepared but I think its better to give someone the benefit of the doubt than criticizing them like that. Hopefully he is able to be more effective next year, I felt bad.

Seemed like his mind was elsewhere the whole class. I couldn't shake the feeling that he doesn't care very much about student progress, which may be because we are undergrads and don't therefore count as human beings. I figure he thinks that his "whitty" jokes can cover up the fact that he doesn't prepare for class.

very nice guy... pays careful attention to students and tries his best to explain things, is interested in discussions, doesnt want to make things difficult. but doesnt know how to explain even simple ideas CLEARLY.. so has to make the same point 50 times in differnt ways until it finally clicks

J Nicholas is like my dad. I was curious is he was a good prof or not. He's got a super dy sense of humour, loves gin & jazz (did you know his wife's an X Jazz singer, still a star in Germany & Japan?) He'd probably appreciate humour in his students

this guy is a really interesting, mind-probing teacher. this course appears really easy on the surface but to truly appreciate it's intricacies is an art. i think nicholas concedes that most students can't understand this stuff so just does it easy. he's a nice guy, kinda shady, love's to play 6/49

Very boring and he uses words that only the hardcore philosophy students can understand. Ease up on the big words bud, we know you have a phd. His pony tail is cool though!

Good guy who cares. Just be sure to remember your etiquette because he's very proper and burns you if you speak when not acknowledged.
