Jon tries his best but that's all I can really say for him. Not a bad guy, just very boring lectures, and often repeats his own jokes. He asks impossible questions nearly every class, expecting everyone to know the answer and seems to get frustrated when no one does. I think he would benefit from keynote slides to keep lectures interesting.

Lectures are confusing and you are on your own if you need help. Lectures and tests will no look the same. He tends to rant during lectures and it is difficult to know when he is actually teaching material.

Don't need to read the textbook weekly like the syllabus says, but very helpful come the midterm and final. Cool guy and very interested in the sociology of deviance, but the lectures can be a bit confusing- he can talk in circles. He pulls in different sources: movies, documentaries, paintings, etc. Overall good guy, good class, and easy A.

Dr. Oplinger is a fantastic professor. He does ramble sometimes and it can be difficult to take notes, but his lectures are incredibly interesting and insightful. He has 30+ years of teaching under his belt and knows almost anything you can imagine. He is now retired, but he was the best professor I've ever had.

Attendance is now mandatory, due to his previously hyper-lax policy. I didn't even remember we were using a textbook in the class; his lectures are enough. If you listen to what he's saying, the guy is absolutely brilliant and fun to listen to. He's a published author, and truly cares about his topic and the students in his classes. Down to earth.

I have to agree with the person that said he rambles and is therefore hard to follow at times, and he does ask questions that obviously no one knows the answers to. I did pay attention and wasn't there just for the credits and found his class extremely boring and dull. It was honestly hard not to fall asleep, but I also had it at 8 AM.

Those of you who think Professor O. is "hard to follow" should stop texting in class and tune in. The man is absolutely brilliant.

Those who say his classes were boring confuse me. Were you listening? His sense of humor is so dry, you really have to be paying attention to get some of it! Yes, he rambles, again, just to see who is paying attention. Basically, if you love the subject, you will love the class. If you are there for the credits and an easy A, you will be bored.

Awesome guy. He'll get you to graduate school. Do the reading, do the work, work even harder and you'll do great in this class. He has the most amazing sense of humor on campus.

He rambled so much in class, it was hard to focus on the materials which were being required for the test. He would ask ridiculous questions no one ever knew the answers to. Overall, nice guy, AWFUL teacher.. don't EVER take a class with him

Class isn't that informative, he kind of goes off on a lot of tangents. But before every test he gives a very detailed study guide. study that and you will surely get an A on every test

He knows his subject and he has the greatest films and slide shows. (You never know when the projector will eat a slide! It's great!) He's so approachable outside of class, and even though 8 o'clock classes are kind of easy to sleep through, I've learned the most Soc/Anthro from his classes.

Okay, he seems like a really smart guy, not fighting with anyone there. I bet he has a lot to teach people, but, grading him as a professor, I found him highly disorganized & unhelpful. Students would ask questions & since he didn't know the answer he'd ignore them. Also, the class was very boring.

Amazingly smart teacher and he is pretty funny if you listen to him. I loved his class, even though he's pretty apathetic about teaching it, although you can tell he really likes the subject and knows what he is talking about. Most understanding and helpful teacher at UMF.

Singularly the most boring class ever, and he's so disorganized that you don't have a clue what's going to be on the test. The thing is, he's smart- just not a great professor, at least at the introductory level.
