Interesting material, but I found the lecture didn't really correspond with what we were to know for the exams. If you can memorize, you'll be set. Gives a list of terms to know for the exam which is helpful, but can be very overwhelming if you're bad at memorization. Really nice guy though.

-NOT AN EASY CLASS, but keep up with the lecture prep and you'll be fine -I could see why a first year may not want to take this, very homework heavy -Lectures are a little rambley, but it's best not to skip them -Exams are extremely fair, if you study -Assignments are fair and simple -Porter is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and eager to help you

The four papers aren't difficult but more of an annoyance as you don't know the exact topic until about 5 days in advance. His midterms however are the worst I have ever seen. It is obvious his passion translates to high expectations for students that are unrealistic. Basically do not take this class as an elective or any of his others.

While he can be a little awkward, it's endearing more than anything else. He makes a lot of obscure references to 70s/80s pop culture. John is clearly passionate and knowledgeable, and specifically with Latin. I'm not sure what other classes with him are like, but Latin is incredibly hard, though John's knowledge and teaching style make it possible

Clearly he just wants to share his knowledge, but that means a lot of reading to get the necessary context. Dry sense of humor and makes a lot of references from 70s to 90s pop culture. Can seem intimidating, but is easy to talk to and is more than willing to help out if you need to find sources or even clean up a term paper thesis.

He expects you to read the material discussed in class and the small assignments which he gives you a choice are mandatory. I'm surprised that many people did not do the required number of assignments. I found him to be fair in grading. I finished with an 82%. If you do the work, show up to class, write a decent essay you will do just fine!

Very knowledgable. Has a very dry sense of humour. You do need to do a lot of reading, and most of your marks are writing based, so if you can't write, his classes may be super difficult. He is really eager to help people, so if you do need help, he will probably be really happy to do so. He gives good feedback; that is, if you can read it.

John is one of the worst professors that i have experienced. Do your best to avid John as there are many other great CMRS profs at the u of s. Just wait a year or even a term to avoid him. You automatically fail the class if you fail an assignment or if you don't hand one in. He has mood swings and can either be in a good mood or bad mood.

Passive aggressive drama king! He walked out of the class just because no one could answer his question. Attendance is also mandatory, or else he'd drop you. This isn't high school anymore!

Lectures are hard to follow and incredibly hard to stay awake for. Tests have little to do with the lecture, and he does not tell you what kind of answers he is looking for on the test. He clearly loves what he's teaching and expects everyone else loves it as much as him.

Not a good prof. Yes he definitely is very interested in his topics but he expects you to have the same level of enthusiasm as he does. His lectures are all over the place and you have no textbook to fall back on either. Overall, a very poor experience.

I don't really know exactly what to say about this guy. I found him quite condescending. Doesn't exactly give you any encouragement to ask questions in class. He expects way too much. You need a at least a 80% on his short tests to even receive credit. The homework load for this class is HUGE. Cannot fall behind in this class.

For a first year class, it's way too much work. The class was everyday, and he usually assigned something like 2+ hours of homework A NIGHT! I had no time for any of my other subjects at the end of the day (and this was only an elective). Only take this if you have a really slack term.

The first time I took Myth I never went to class because I thought it was boring (three hours at night? No thank you) and I did poorly. I retook it recently as a T/Th morning class and it went much better. When you show up for class, things are a lot easier to remember. I got 81% this time. If you take this class seriously, you can do very well.

Lots of students complain that he marks too hard, you have to memorize way too many terms & do a lot of reading.Grow up! This isn't high school anymore! You may have to work your ass off for a good mark in this class but it's worth it.When you are paying money for a class, expect to learn something!I found him energetic and funny.knew his stuff.
