Comment:
If you are considering taking Phil 366 as an elective and don't want to spend 10+ hrs a week on the class DONT TAKE IT! The prof expects students to do 2-3 readings every 2 days, he also expects you to know and be able to quote them. Many of these are 20+ pages and difficult reads. Overall TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE, Never again!

Be very careful with this professor. He is a master of deception. Not at all what he seems.

Comment:
Dr. Simpson takes a unique approach to teaching philosophy. He expects students to come to class and participate fully through guided discussion. While this is sometimes slow-moving, you end up with a deeper understanding of the material. He is extremely devoted to his students, and will go out of his way to meet with you if you have questions.

Comment:
Okay, so Dr. Simpson is an interesting person. He is really helpful in one-to-one conversation and very generous with comments. The classes, however, are easily derailed and slow moving. He has the highest expectations of any prof I've had in 4 years. Don't expect an A unless you're madly passionate / already know lots about science and society.

Comment:
Dr. Simpson has the ability to take abstract philosophical concepts and present them in a clear and interesting manner. His classes are dynamic and engaging. He is a very fair marker, if you attend class and do the work you won't do poorly but he won't hand out A's like candy either. If you have any interest in the subject, you'll enjoy his classes

Still the best prof I've had so far at university. Really clear and informative, makes the lectures fun and presents material in an interesting way. Pretty important to go to class, but even if it wasn't you'd still want to go because it's so fun! Highly recommended.

Class is surprisingly interesting, even though I slept everyday in class, when it came time to studying for the final or writing the papers, the power point slides helped a lot. Easy class, and interesting.

While he knows how to make classes interesting and useful, he needs to keep in mind that he's teaching university students, not elementary school aged boy scouts. Also, not enough time spent on giving directed lectures which makes things a little tougher to understand.

This class demands a high level of student participation. If you want to do well, you will need to really participate... and be prepared for classes. He will expect good arguments in your papers. This is a difficult class... but John will do anything in his power to help students out. He is extremely dedicated to students.

Comment:
Although a very good prof and helpful, is too insistent on babysitting students as if they're still in junior high. Class time was used for self-group discussions. Was insistent on a course contract, which was nice to keep the class on track. Unfortunately, marks were not based on editing and revision of papers...not on the phil material at hand.
