I took 2 classes with Lipman. One is Modern East Asia and the other Chinese Civilization. His lectures are awesome, 4th hour very interesting, reading assignments can be a bit too much in MEA. But he is super helpful and willing to talk with u. Could be a tough grader, but as long as u put effort and communicate w/ him. it's fine.

Wonderful professor! He keeps the subject very interesting and his fourth hour discussions are incredibly valuable to the overall class experience. Prof. Lipman is very personable and easy to approach if you're having trouble. He assigns an intense amount of reading and expects great quality from essays, but he's fair and always willing to help.

Be prepared for a lot of reading. If you can't keep up with the readings, you may have difficulty. Also, visual learners may struggle since he talks at you. Generally, he was a great teacher. He's very laid back and sometimes humorous. He's easy to talk to if you're having trouble. Previous knowledge about Asian history isn't necessary but helpful.

He is the most knowledgeable person I've ever met and he is very interesting too. The way he conducts the class is quite traditional, but history is a very serious matter so don't expect it to be as funny as other classes could be. Readings and assignments may seem intimidating but turns out you can still get good grades if your view is solid

Professor Lipman gives one of the best lectures on campus. Although he may be a somewhat tough grader, you feel a sense of fulfillment at the end of it. He is amazing at striking the student's interest while giving lectures that are both thought provoking and life changing. Take Lipman's class, if not, you may live to regret it.

Modern East Asia is difficult only because there's a ton of reading, and a ton of information that he tries to cover in just one semester. It's hard to absorb everything he has to say because of the speed at which we cover everything, but a lot of it is really interesting. Balance it with less work-intensive classes, but take it if you can!

Amazing professor, but you really need to read or at least get a rough idea of what he is going to talk about. Welcome discussion and different opinions. Not a tough grader on essay as long as you make your point and correct grammar mistakes. Go to his office hour will be really helpful. Try his class if you want to know some thing about east Asia!

If you don't have some prior knowledge about Chinese history, class may be a little difficult. He expects you to know a lot about China before even taking the class. tough grader because he expects your writing to reflect his opinions and thoughts.

I love lipman! I think he's the best professor I've taken a class with. He's a really hard grader but it makes the class so much more worth it in the end cause you will really work your ass off. He was the sole reason why I've never missed any of his classes.

Lipman's simply amazing. He's incredibly smart & funny; speaks a dozen languages; expects you to work hard; but he's also very caring and helpful. Take his class before he retires - you've paid more than $4000 a year, and his classes are worth it.

He's just my advisor, but talking to him makes my mind bleed, which is good. He's the kind of charismatic straight man who can address you as "girl", and uses the word **** but in a friendly non-insulting way. Check out the poetry page of his website.
