Comment:
Marquardt is a science-denier and his lectures are often based entirely on his opinions and morals. He will frequently shut students down in discussion. It was quite difficult to get through a summer with him due to the stress. The workload is grueling and centered on politics, though it may work if you learn well through repetition.

This class was run on a loose structure. While he was interesting and put forth questions that made you think critically, he did most the talking. This type of class relies on the students being willing to participate, so if your really uninterested in discussion this class might be a big bore to you. Hard grader, but he gives you good feedback.

Excellent professor. If you do the work, you will improve a lot your writing skills and you will even develop a taste for reading. He's very fair in his grading and you can always ask him feedbacks to get better. This class was from far the most interesting class I have ever taken!

Very tough grader, but if you are a decent writer and want to improve, this is probably one of the best English classes you can take at DVC. I thought I was a good writer, but after this semester I know I'm many times better. He is great at giving feedback, and has extremely interesting group discussions every class. If you want to learn, take this

Great teacher. Respectful, knowledgeable and pretty funny. The readings always make you think outside of the box and grow on a personal level. You have to read and write, but nothing overwhelming. He can be a tough grader, but always gives great feedbacks to improve. Take this class if you want to learn how to think critically and become smarter.

I was appalled by his attitude, I tell everyone I know at DVC to stay clear of his classes. He encourages narrow-mindedness and does not give feedback. If you do not understand what he wants you to do from his first explanation he tells you to ask other students. He said on the 1st day that hardly anyone passes his classes.

I had to drop this course because it was causing such a grievance. He had an assignment in which you had to write 25,000 words over the course of the semesters, broken up in the multiple papers. Probably the most useless assignment ever. His theory as a teacher is "Don't teach the students but make them write a sh*t ton" it doesn't work.

Don't take if you're looking for an easy A. He's definitely tough with his grading, but it helps you a lot if you take his comments into consideration. Assigns essays quite often, almost one every week or so. If you miss 4 classes you can't get higher than a C- If you miss 5 he drops you from the class. Good discussions-taking him again.

Professor Marquardt's class is not for someone trying to get an easy A. That being said, I probably learned more from his class than I have from any other English class I've taken. The content is a lot to get through but if you participate during lecture it makes writing the essays much easier.

Comment:
This class was just another opportunity for the instructor to talk about his personal beliefs and opinions. Lectures were entirely pointless, but draining nonetheless. Marquardt's constant bad mood and benevolent sexism towards women made class and office hours one-on uncomfortable. He is completely inconsiderate towards his students in every way.

I highly recommend him! He is an amazing and dedicated teacher. I took his ENGL 118 for summer. Since english is my second language and the summer term is fast paced, the class was a little challenging, but I didn't cared much for the grade, because my goal was to learn English, and so for me this experience was a great one. I ended up with a B

I took his 118 and 122 classes and am planning to take ENGL-123 with him as well. It is a tough class and he can be a tough grader but my writing has improved so much since taking his classes. We had lots of class discussions that were very enjoyable and informative. You will learn a lot if you work hard at it.

an absolute nightmare. I have taken English AP and English Honors in high school recieving A's in both, yet this class was impossible. He's very close-minded and cynical. He's also made it clear he couldn't care less about his job or his students. Discussions were interesting but it's nearly impossible to earn anything above a C.

This class was so helpful! He's not an easy A, but if you really want to learn to write well he will definitely help you. He's willing to work with students in class and during office hours. My writing improved and my brain felt like it got smarter. Go to class since you'll learn a lot! I ended with a B

Don't take this class with Marquardt if you're not up for a challenge. His class will turn you into a better writer and think more about what you are writing. LOVES MLA format. Do the work and it'll pay off in the end. Participation matters. If you do what he asks then you'll get a C

This is not an easy class to just pop in and "get" an "A" you truly have to "earn" the grade you want here and he'll make that very clear from the start. If you take things to heart and do not really have a sense of humor be careful as he can be very blunt to the point where someone might get their feelings hurt. OVERALL; GREAT CLASS
