I never noticed the "favorites" issue. I definitely have different art tastes than him, but I learned a lot in the class that I never expected to, had a great time, was challenged, and would absolutely encourage taking Art 153 with him.

The diversity of ratings for Dane demonstrate what one other reviewer said: he plays favorites. If you are in his "In" group, you love him, spend time after class with him, and share his minimalist/modern art tastes. If not, you get little to no instruction or feedback on your work. This man should not be teaching. If you want to follow prescribed "ideas" and "suggestions" and COMPLETELY abandon your own creativity (this is after, all, an art class), if you want to be wholly submissive, then this is the prof for you. I cannot even stress enough what he lacks as a professor - and human being for that matter.

Cons: His voice, high pitched, not an indoorvoice. only likes minimalism, stresses his ideas. Pros: he rewards obvious hardwork regardless of subject matter, but you need to insist. I have had him for five classes, he is like-able, chooses favourites, and generally a decent man/prof.

Very very good. Absolutely brilliant artist. More than willing to help out and give suggestions. Helps students see things from different perspectives. Teaches more than what is ordinarily taught in an intro drawing class.

Tends to make many critical remarks. Likes only certain styles of art. Doesn't seem to appeciate students puting a lot of time and effert into their work. Wouldn't recomend to someone who wants to enjoy this art class. I would recommend a different prof.
