Professor Free was very sweet, but she makes you work for your grades. We had to read about 25 plays for the class & turn in a 5 question take home quiz for 20 of those plays. She also assigned a 15 page research paper that you turn in at the end of the semester. I wouldn't recommend this class for someone that's looking for an easy A or B even.

Comment:
Katharine's lectures are extremely verbose with superfluous information that is incredibly difficult to sift out from the important information. This class should most definitely have some sort of ancient lit prereq or something because the plays you will read are difficult and long and her expectations in your understanding of them are sky high.

She is really nice lady and truly loves the theater. She even sparked some interest in me as someone who had no interest what so ever coming into the class. Didn't grade too harshly on exams or papers either. Wish I would've done more of my reading because an A was super possible, but I'll take the B slacking off a bit.

She is a really sweet lady, and while she talked about the people in class who were theater majors a lot, she didn't treat those of us who were not theater majors any differently. She's a really easy grader, giving lots of A's on the midterms and midterm papers. I think she's sweet, witty, and a really wonderful lady.

Great teacher but be warned: HARD CLASS in the realm of papers. The homework is pretty much murder, but when you get out, youll have so much knowledge on theater lit

She is very passionate about the subject matter, but her lectures can be pretty boring. She gives out outlines of her lectures before the class, which is helpful. Weekly quizzes, reviews on plays around LMU, one midterm, one paper (rough and final draft), one final. As long as you do the work you'll get an A.

If theatre is not a serious passion, don't take this class. She is nice, but the class is extremely difficult to comprehend. It is not at all easy, and the reading takes forever, and even if you do the reading you still understand it poorly. Very difficult.

One of my favorite teachers in theater, she was the one who got me interested in theater history, she's sweet and there's extra credit but don't underestimate her tests, make sure you study thoroughly!

I really liked the materials we read and the lectures were fairly interesting, but I thought Dr. Free was a REALLY unfair grader when it came to the midterm and final. She's a good teacher as far as the classroom goes, but she really is not helpful during office hours and if you've never toured European theatres, she already hates you.

she is a really sweet person but the class is pretty boring but she really tries to bring in movies and stuff that students will like. there is a lot of reading and thus lots of quizzes but if you pay attention and study for the tests you'll do fine in the class.

It was alot of reading and quizzes for that reading. Also, tests on lots of terms/definitions with essays. Despite that, learning and reading about the different plays and theater literature was very interesting. I liked knowing about greek drama, all the way to elizabethean, italian, and shakespearean drama.

I really liked her. I wasn't a theater major but she was nice to me. I missed 3 classes, was late a lot, wrote the final paper the night before and still managed to get an A-. Her love for theater inspired me to love the theater too. She is a really kind-hearted person, u just need to get on her good side by paying attention in class, that's all.

I hate her. I think that she is the worst person. She doesn't look at a student as a "person" but merely a name that gets a grade. I would NEVER recommend her to anyone.

I am not a theatre major but somehow I got on her good side. I visited her during office hours and she clearly explained exactly what she wanted on the paper. She is willing to give extra credit and she praises me and others all the time. Overall an effective and good instructor.
