I would not recommend this professor to young writer who wants to improve. She is very tough on grading and many of the in class assignments do not help with the writings. It seems like you do more reading than writing in the class. She usually makes the students do all the editing of papers unless you personally go to her office hours for help.

There is a lot of work that goes into this class. On top of writing substantial essays, there are multiple readings you have to do for each class. Every week there is also a pop quiz on the readings, which become predictable later in the semester. Very little class time to work or get help with the essays either.

I did fairly well in english in high school, took this class first semester freshman year. If you actually go, actually do the readings, and actually participate in class you're fine. It isn't too hard of a grade if you put in the effort, she's pretty reasonable.

I have her now, and I aced all my papers in AP Literature and AP Language and Arts in high school, but the best I can get in this class is a 2.7! She definitely grades harshly. She picks out tiny details to mark you down on. I also was told she is the Head of the Department of English here.
