Koizumi-sensei is a really nice, approachable prof, and she was able to make a three week intensive course at least somewhat bearable. She is really understanding about any concerns people about the course. However, her feedback on your work can be a bit inconsistent. Also, she does not reply to emails that often.

I took the 3 week intensive version of this class and I would not have survived without Koizumi Sensei! She cared about us improving, and was generous with her grades for homework/projects cause she knew how hard the midterm/exam are. Of course this class goes super fast so be ready to study HARD. If possible work ahead and treat class as practice.

She cares about her students and their improvement. She notices their progress and also gives a helpful feedback when necessary. She might not be clear when giving instructions regarding assignments but she will try to help if you visit her office.

Very caring and nice professor. This japanese class in general is somewhat difficult for an intro language course, so it's advantageous to have a Chinese/Korean/Japanese language background. However, she is very accessible and helpful in office hours, so I recommend you go frequently especially if you don't have an asian language background.

Koizumi Sensei is a very nice and approachable instructor. I enjoy her lectures as there are many useful informations, which helps you to learn Japanese that can be applied into daily life. Becomes handy when you want to travel to Japan. Assignment wise, just follow the rubrics and hand in on time, you will be fine. Generally, an easy course

Her classes are good enough, however her expectations for assignments are unfathomable. It's always her way or the highway, from your writing style to the EXACT content of a story supposedly personal to YOU. Be prepared to guess and fulfill all her actual expectations or you won't get more out of her other than "you can't do that".

Terrible. Second day into class and I already want to drop. What she explained in class was the total opposite of what she expected to see from her students. Also tends to talk down to students. Got multiple e-mail replies from her asking things like "Do you understand what I said in class?", "Did you read the text carefully?" Avoid her if you can!

AVOID. Her explanation is just unclear and has double standard. And her use of word in emailing is very rude. Also, she is super picky on assignment and she doesn't even explain it clearly. She wants us to talk about hometown and I gave her description and got rejected. Do I know my hometown better or you do?

Honestly, avoid if you can. You need to basically all the studying by yourself. She doesn't go over vocabs to help students memorize. Her class is very boring due to her being the only one talking - she introduces the grammar briefly and makes you do some workbook questions. No practicing in pairwork or any other interactive learning. AVOID

A nice prof who is approachable and always willing to help. Her lectures notes are not very helpful if you didn't pre-read. You're better off studying from the textbook and coming to class with some knowledge of the material. She also doesn't focus a lot on vocab/kanji. Generally an ok prof

The material in the class was very useful and well selected, but I found the expectations to be a little unrealistic. She would explain tests in detail (which is great) except that often the test wasn't what she said it would be and would focus on something completely different. Also, we had a class of 13, and we got scaled down (76 was too high)

She is well prepared and very caring teacher. This is the best class I've ever had in UBC. There are some competition among students, but it makes you even motivated. Keiko sensei also gives a lot of details in her hand-outs. In addition, it seems everyone loves the quiz!Nice lady and very helpful!

I think she was a great teacher, and I definitely wouldn't consider myself a teachers pet. I thought she was really funny and her classes had an easy going feel. Easier more reasonable marker than my first Japanese teacher. I think people who think shes bad, didn't put work in outside class.

Her class is always friendly, always engaging. At times, she can be a little confusing about her expectations, but she will ALWAYS answer you if you put your hand up. The people who don't like her say that because they are too passive and don't make the effort to learn and gain clarity. Be careful of the final, it covers lessons 1-6.

Very friendly, but her class is difficult. It doesn't help that she has trouble with English grammar sometimes, which can make her explanations unclear. Attendance and independent study absolutely mandatory. Quizzes fairly easy, midterm and final very hard. I've never gotten anything but an A in a language class and almost failed her final.

Comment:
Teaching style is not suited for second/foreign language learning. This style mirrors the education philosophy of Japan where the teacher talks and the students just listen. There was no discussion, only memorization and writing. This prof will not improve your Japanese. You will do better to find a Japanese friend and simply talk with them.
