He was the worst professor I ever had. He had absolutely no interest in helping his students and he turned me from social work completely. I went to him for help once and he basically told me that I was wasting his time.

Not helpful & if he disagrees with your opinion he'll single you out infront of the class about it & make you seem wrong. He tests on everything, even material that wasn't actually said to be mandatory. Attendance isn't mandatory but recommended because he has random pop quizzes that are worth marks.

I was interested in social work before taking this course, but now I would not even consider continuing that. If you take this course, make sure you study EVERYTHING. He tests on materials that are under "non-mandatory". He is also extremely rude when communicating with students.

I did this course online, and I still did not find ken barter very good. He is a pretty picky marker and his tests are pretty difficult. They require a lot of memorization...study very hard and you will do okay. He gave me good marks on my assignments and my final paper. Unfortunately he's the only choice for the 1710 course. Good luck!

Such a bad prof, but unfortunately the only one who teaches the intro to SCWK. He is very unclear with expectations, provides terrible notes, and isn't helpful at all. Tests are VERY specific and are extremely difficult, even with a lot of studying. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this teacher.

His lecture notes and discussions are so unclear and all over the place. He was rude to me and just gave me snide remarks when I had questions regarding the exam I failed. I felt like I knew the material but the questions on his exams are overly specific and difficult. He's not helpful, boring, doesn't know to smile. DO NOT recommend Ken Barter! D:

If you are a dedicated student, passionate about entering the social work field, he provides an exceptional intro. He covers everything w/remarkable real examples fr. a variety of sources. I've relied on the material he taught me for background knowledge on second level social work courses. He is also willing to help, even w/ admissions questions.

Student expectations very unclear, extremely hard marker. His notes are useless, and are often not based on the book. When asking for help or to improve a mark, I was told that I hadn't studied hard enough and to accept the mark I was given. Unfortunately, only prof that teaches introductory course. Completely ruined social work for me.

He is such a horrible prof, do not look for help or ask a questions cause all you're getting is a saucy answer back and that's if you get one at all... Turned me away from wanting to do Social Work at mun! Social Work is about helping people, something this prof don't do!!

Completed through distance. Most difficult time ever experienced in receiving a timely and clear answer from a professor in the duration of my degree. It was not an enjoyable course, made me reconsider the degree for a short while afterwards.

Very knowledgeable about the field of Social Work. If you attend class, keep good notes and stay on top of your readings, it's possible to get a great mark. An excellent prof to introduce prospective students to the profession of Social Work.

Boring, his class is almost not tolerable, mid term consists of memorization. Big essay at the end unfortunately, and you better come to class because he has quizzes no less then 4 no more the 6. They are for attendance purposes only and its worth 5%. All I can say is you need this class and you have to want it bad enough to endure his class.

Really did not enjoy this class, such a turn off to SW. He was very boring in his lectures and went directly by his slides, although he was open to discussion which was the only thing that kept me awake! The 12 page paper is brutal and the midterm was ridiculous most people failed! Sadly you need this course to apply for SW, i'd do it online.

Dr Barter is good for giving some real life examples of social work. BUT I found he rambled when answering questions and was not clear with explanations. In order to do good in this course, I needed to review the notes (which I did fr the book myself) every night. Dr Barter's notes were not fully developed. Recommend this course online!

I personally enjoyed his lectures, they were interesting. He can be a tad boring though and he has very strict opinions on things. He made social work seem very unappealing and he is very unclear about his exams and what material is on them. Although I did good in the course, I will not be pursuing a social work career.

I thought I would enjoy Social Work, however I found the course very boring and the prof in my opinion was not very clear in getting the message across, especially for the format of the midterm exam. We were told that there would be so many multiple choice questions and a few long answers, there was maybe 4 multiple choice and the rest were fill.
