It seems like he thinks we know all the terms that he's talking about so he doesn't really explain them. It is hard to understand his lecture, unfortunately, lecture slides are not helpful either. So if you want to understand the course you have to read the textbook. Most of the time he doesn't reply emails.

Very helpful... Unlike most other actsc profs, his final was pretty easy and tested all the major concepts... Midterm was somewhat harder but overall a really good prof .. The downside is that the only practice problems you have are the assignments... His slides are very important... Everything comes from the slides

Ken Tan is by far the best actuarial science professor I have encountered at Waterloo. His explanations are very clear and he shows that he cares a lot about his students. Assignments and tests are fair and have good sense of humour too! Highly recommended if you have the chance to take any course with him in the future.

He's probably the best Actsc prof I've had so far, but definitely not an easy marker. Course material isn't too hard. However, the tests are a little tricky tho. If you want a good grade you do have to learn+understand. Warning: Simplying doing the exercise Qs will do u no good on tests.

absolutely the best prof ever, his final tested a lot on understanding, which is useful, since its pointless to just learn the math, (who doesnt know the math around here) a good basic knowledge for later usage. exam isnt hard, as long as you understand his slides, and hes nice when it come to asking questions after class, definitely my fav prof!

Had for both 372 and 445. Although he does rely heavily on slides, you need to attend to fill in the blanks. First set of tests were quite difficult, but they really wake you up and force (aka scare) you to study. The finals were challenging but fair if you study. Put in the work and you can do well, even if you fail one of the tests, as I did!
