He can make the boring aspects of history quite/somewhat fascinating/interesting. Need to pay attention/concentrate/focus when he is lecturing to get over his speech disability/impediment. Not only lectures but uses audio and video to instruct/teach his pupils/students.

Really nice funny teacher. Tests can be a little hard. Overall the books we had to read were good and interesting. He played a lot of music and movies. Does take attendance everyday, but the class was interesting so it was ok.

Very interesting professor, I loved his lectures. however, class was very difficult, esp. for a 100 level. a lot of papers, very detailed exams. said he didn't care about dates but almost half the test was dates. he grades hard, but you learn a lot in his class. if you work hard, you'll make a good grade, i had a 99% in his class.

I have a 3.78 GPA and this guy was tough! Way too much work for a 100 level class. VERY BORING lecture style. You read 4 books plus textbook and they're ALL boring. Tests are VERY detailed, read EVERY word of the chapters. Stay clear of this guy if you looking for an easy or exciting class.

Smant is not a great professor he really is not even good, he know history but is not concerned with students grades. You have to read 3 books, 500,250, and 275 pages plus read the history book itself, be prepared to work. I would stay away from Smant. grades hard and gives no breaks, and that sucks.

This professor has been teaching for ever and as I can tell has learned very little from his years. This class was very hard for a 100 level class and he was NOT helpfull, he seems to be more interested in his cats than the future of his students. take anyone but this guy, I did get a C+ in the class but hard to work very hard to get it.

Dr. Smant was not a good teacher, he grades hard and gives no breaks, I would not take any class by him again. I have had much better professors than him. The things you have to remember are 300-400 level and very detailed, although no dates, this course was waaay to hard for a 100 level class.

Dr. Smant reads from his own notes, and they are definitely not in a clear outline form. There is no textbook but there are 5 books to read. A good rule is like a page for each question he asks on assignment sheets. He doesn't write comments on papers or tests so you don't really know what he counted off for and he grades hard.

Smant is one of those Proffesors that really knows his subject. He lectures a lot, but it is always interesting. I loved how he uses videos to give us visuals as to how life was. The books he assigns are great selections and the questions he asks are fair and to the point...awesome Professor!

One of the most demanding professors at IU and definatly one of the best! Uses many forms of teaching techniques and is the most interesting, funny, and nice Profs around. Take his class, be ready to work and learn more than you thought you would.
