Comment:
You will learn more from the textbook than the professor. Professor Lurie reads lessons from a binder verbatim and the lectures are useful only for understanding what will be assessed. His accent makes lectures incomprehensible. Students with misconceptions are belittled if they ask for explanations in class until no questions are asked at all.

If you like someone that's going to talk about math very abstractly, take his class. I didn't go to any classes and got a good grade. If you happen to be stuck with him like I was, go to Stratton Hall math center and have a tutor teach you it. They're way more helpful.

Comment:
Professor Lurie talks quietly, un-understandably, and doesn't really answer questions. His lectures are very useless. Because half of the grade comes from quizzes that you can bring notes to, it's not hard to do well if you read the textbook and do all the (optional) homework. Beware that his exams are very conceptual, not problem solving so much.

His lectures are confusing but you can tell he is brilliant and knows his stuff. But seriously a lot of people don't bother going to lecture because he can be so confusing.

Lurie uses a lot of theory and concepts that are pretty hard to keep up with and often doesn't do examples or does very little. I ended up taking my own notes from the textbook and teaching myself most of the material. Tests aren't too hard for the most part if you know what you're doing.

A truly respectable man in his field. I had a great time in his class. Lots of theory but that is what is important to know and then you can apply it.

Professor Lurie is a nice guy, but his lectures are always long and meaningless. He never seems to follow his own schedule in the syllabus, and 90% of his lectures are proofs or concepts. However his tests are very easy, they cover half of what you learned if that, and the content is not challenging if you do work outside class. Awful class, easy A

He spends the whole lecture doing proofs on one formula and doesn't explain how too use it. Try your hardest to get any other calc 4 prof.

He is very dedicated to teaching the material well. He insists you ask in class if you have any questions on the covered topic. Gives good analogies and tricks to remember tricky material. The Matthews textbook is worth it's price and can be a good reference guide for future related courses.

What I want to say you can only learn by yourself if you take his class because his lecture is in a mess! Fortunately, his tests are not too tough and you can got an A if you can digest almost examples on the textbook. Therefore you can choose his course if you are confident about your self-learning ability.

Avoid taking his class, but if you want to challenge yourself, go on. He goes over proofs and not what's important for his poor tests. Half the class failed his exam and a retake was issued, first time I've ever seen this happen. For office hours, he simply wants you to the exit the way you came in. But if you can be patient, he just might help.

Never translated what that textbook said, just wrote it word for word on the board. Would not recommend. Did a lot of self learning this class.

I would not recommend taking any math class with this professor. The syllabus is clear but his lectures are not. Had to learn most of the material by my self. Did not want to scale any tests. I am sure he has good intentions but comes off as uninterested and hard to understand.

I can see why many people are complaining about this professor but this class is not too bad. He doesn't follow the syllabus well and his tests are horrible. But if u're wise enough, you will pull of an A in his class without ever going to class. I basically took his class as a challenge and saw what I was capable of without a professor. easy A

Very dedicated professor who provides crystal clear explanations. He will walk you through from start to finish and you will understand the material from a fundamental level. Highly recommended; if you have a choice between two professors for a course you should choose Lurie.

Prof. Lurie is not a good teacher. His lectures are all proofs that will do nothing towards your practical understanding of the material. The homework problems he gives are decent, but his exams are far more difficult than anything you've seen in the homework, and there's no partial credit for differentiation or integration errors. Awful class.

Excellent class, but you need to work hard and review undergrad courses to get an A. I learned a lot of necessary math for the subsequent master's courses. Prof. Lurie is always available to help. And yes, he gets annoyed w/ stupid questions, and so would I... This is grad level!!

Horrible teacher. Talks down to students. Do not ask questions unless you want to be humiliated for not knowing something. Decided to cut a 10 week class down to 7 and cram everything, had to add extra an class in order to meet his shorter time frame. Just goes over theories and barely any examples. You won't learn anything from him
