He tries very hard to present himself as gruff and difficult, but he is pretty easy going.

Comment:
Very sure of his opinions. Obviously knows the subject very well, but found his teaching unhelpful. Instead of touching upon broad historic themes each class, he reels off a list of often unconnected figures from the period. One is not left with any coherent sense of the history as a whole. Quite brusque and rude personally, but fair marker.

He is an interesting prof. I can't say that I like him particularly well but I also can't say that I hate him. He has a pretty good sense of humor. He marked one assignment particularly hard to teach us a lesson but we did get to improve the mark in a 2nd assignment. The other assignments and the final exam were marked very fairly.

Lectures were not overly engaging or interesting. Some lectures were quite clear and others didn't seem to have any rhyme of reason. Marking was difficult and comments on the written work were minimal.

Comment:
Stewart is neither as controversial as he is made out to be, nor is he as stringent with marks as oft reported. Lectures are engaging but not as structured as I like - and no specific chapters to read. Stewart makes an effort to help students prepare their essays. Good class. Recommended especially for science and health science students.

Dr Stewart is brilliant and one of the few profs who demand you earn his respect by hard work and diligence, rather than suffering fools in his class. He challenges every student and if you can rise to the occasion and defend your opinions, you will gain his respect. Don't take his class if you can't handle vibrant satirical discussion. Brilliant!

One of the most interesting profs I've had. Tremendously Anti-Religion, so steer away any hardcore religious fanatics. His comments on papers are harsh and offer no suggestions for betterment. Class was still very interesting and his lectures and subtle dry humour was welcoming. He Didn't even bother to show up to the final, kinda bizarre.

He is one of the rudest, most arrogant prick I've met. He truly enjoys putting down his students. If you are taking his class be prepared to be put on the spot in front of everyone, be told your basically useless, stupid and any morals, views you have are wrong.

"This is not a class for students who cannot read. This is not a class for students who cannot write." These are words from Professor Stewart's opening lecture the first day of class, and they ring true. This is one of the most difficult but also one of the most interesting and rewarding classes I've ever taken. highly recommended.

Dr. stuwart is great! what i took from his class...among many interesting information concerning the history of science was one quote that everyone should live by. "All people have views. All views are not equal. Some have substance and some don't." FYI: people who don't want to learn anything, do not take this class! His sarcasm is what makes him!

This prof is one you either love or hate. While I didn't do to great in his class, he was one that will do what is neccessary to get you to do your best. He makes it crystal clear that if you aren't going to try and want to just slack off...DO NOT take his class. He was on the top of my list of profs that actually taught me something! As well a

He is a good prof. and if in this class expect to talk and know your material, cliff notes and reading only part of the material will leave you in the dark. This class is the reward for sitting through the lectures in 283 and 284 because now you get the opportunity to fight back, just make sure you know what you are talking about if you do.

Seemed interesting and with a good sense of humor. BUT...When a prof spends 15 minutes at the beginning of class telling the class how stupid they are, so stupid in fact, that they must be genetically flawed, well I think not only is he wasting my time but also my money. Note that this was not just one occasion, it occurred almost every class.

This guy is kinda insane. He subscribes to some strange beliefs. It was actually very difficult to go through his class having him verbally torment the students. It seems nearly impossible to get on his good side. His negative energy can actually bring a student down. I could not handle it and needed to drop his class.

Sitting in his class listening to him pick apart his pupils was painful. By putting people on the spot and criticizing the writing skills of his students he made me feel uncomfortable and awkward. I had to drop the class cause I was actually scared of the guy.

I find it amusing that none of the frowny faces left any comments. Dr. Stewart is a great prof, probably the most knowledgable I've ever met. He's dedicated to his subject, and his off-hand, dry, sarcastic sense of humour made this one of my favourite classes. Warning: hard-core religious types beware, this is not the class for you.

Comment:
Those who have given Dr. Stewart bad reviews probably lack integrity - they have likely been offended by his well noted (yet humorous) sarcasm, and his willingness to expose students who fail to do the required work. Only take Dr. Stewart's class if you are a serious student. For those concerned about their feelings getting hurt, find another prof.
