3 exams. no midterm, no final. one paper but it's easy. no textbook, but a student manual. an interest in art, even a small one, is helpful to have for this class- it helps with understanding/learning the material. dixon is easy to understand and kind. discussions are boring but help in preparing for the essay questions in exams, which are MC+essay

Be expected to work for a good grade! Exams are easy if you study for them. Make sure you give yourself a good 1-2 weeks before the exams to study the material. You have to memorize hundreds of paintings.

This class is extremely difficult and boring unless you are interested in art. It has a lot of memorizing or random art work and the test are extremely difficult. There is no extra credit, and the class consists of only 3 tests.

Dixon's tests were sort of difficult to study for at times, but if you paid attention in class and took good notes it wasn't so bad. I enjoyed her jokes and her passion about artwork made things interesting.

She was the worst professor I have ever had. She made no sense and her information was wrong. Her grading criteria is also confusing and unhelpful. She never explained why she gave the grades she did and when she made a mistake she would not admit and she would move on to another irrelevant topic.

Comment:
HOA105 is the worst class offered at Syracuse University. Unless you major in art history, this class is terrible. Memorizing hundreds of artworks is tedious and unnecessary. If you want to spend your days memorizing 1000 year old artworks then take this class, otherwise; STAY AWAY. I do not recommend taking this class.

She is honestly one of the most boring people I have had to listen to for an hour twice a week. Lectures are so dry and about irrelevant facts that nobody cares about. Test format is timed, and gives a minute for each multiple choice question and only 7-10 minutes for essays. TA's re nice, perhaps it's just that I have 0 intrest in old paintin

I almost didn't stay in her class, but I'm glad I did. It turned out to have some of the most interesting articles and discussions in my entire time at Syracuse.

She is a teacher who goes through the motions without any real passion. If you do not do well on her tests there is no redemption. Her TA's are ok but she is cold. Stay away!!

Her lectures are easy and to the point however the tests are EXTREMELY difficult. You have to memorize EVERYTHING. Was not a huge fan of the class. I did poorly and put so much effort and went to every class.

Loved this class. Didn't have to put a ton of effort in, just take notes and you will be fine. She is funny and the makes the material interesting. Tests are alot of memorization, but honestly its not a big deal at all. I easily got an A in this class and did not make it a priority.

If you're not on her good side, you can forget about ever being treated fairly. She gives incorrect data and will argue with you, even if you're pointing at a fact in a textbook. Manipulative, harsh, and very unpleasant to work with.

Closedminded, sometimes gives contradictory info. Txtbook will say otherwise, don't argue just go w/ what she gave you.Pretends she knows how to write correctly, paper assignment is graded hard. She'll pretend it's no big deal but yell at the class for not making it a big deal. Can be kind of pretensious, get on her good side!

I liked her arts and ideas class, but this upper level class was soooo bad. It was basically a religion class with a few works of art mixed in. She is VERY opinionated about how students should write, and grades accordingly. Unfortunately, she also taught us incorrect facts, stories, etc. and got a LOT of important info wrong.

I already loved history and art but after taking her class I loved it even more, the class is extremely intresting and if you love ancient art, history of the ancient world and traveling around the world to visit historic places, monuments, museums, etc. you should definetly take the class.

she is very knowledgeable about the subject and focuses a lot on the context of the pieces (which helps with the short essays on the tests). there's no final and the tests aren't cumulative. going to lecture is a must and she lets you out like 20 minutes early each class. really great class!
