Comment:

He may be a little hard to understand at times but the man is brilliant. The amount he knows about American History is amazing. He is a hard grader, but if you go to him with your paper he helps you improve your grade by a complete letter. However, this is his last semester. New Paltz is losing a gem!

Comment:

Professor Hauptman knows his subject, but he does not know how to convey it in an interesting or (often times) clear manner. Lectures almost always go longer than class length, reviews for exams are incoherent and unduly brief, and he fails to get past Reagan in lectures. His teaching methods are almost as outdated as his wardrobe.

Professor Hauptman truly wants the students to succeed, but you have to see his office hours if you aren't positive on your essay being worthy of an A. He will spend time possible working with and thats all he really wants---students to see him for office hours. The lectures can become very boring but other than 3 essays, it is just 2 tests.

Prof. Hauptman is a lovely man who is willing to work with you to help you on your way. He's very knowledgeable but soft-spoken, sit near the front of the class. Be willing to work and READ but it's all worth the effort you put in. I had no problems because I did the work and didn't WHINE about it! BTW- I worked full time during the class.

Absolutely horrible class. I can't stand this man at all and have honesty never disliked a professor as much as I do him. He comes across as being nice and willing to help but he really just thinks he's better than you and nothing you do on your own is good enough. His lectures are completely scattered because he likes to listen to his own voice.

HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!He expects graduate work. He does not want to teach, he wants everyone to listen to him. He knows a lot and does not ever stop you about it. If you go to him w/ your paper he is not helpful, he does not teach, he rewrites it over and over again until it is his paper you are handing in.He will kill your GPA! Nothing is good enough

Do NOT take this class if you're not a history major or if you're a freshman. TOUGH grader, I loved history before I had him, need EXTREMELY detailed facts on tests. Tests were 4 essays in 2 hours (he gave extra time), although he does give out review sheets with about 15 questions for the first 2 and 25 on the last one, you have to know EVERYTHING

Took him for Empire State & Civil War. Sweet man, but definitely a harsh grader. He knows too much about NY, and if you offer a fact (or even opinion) other than what he feels is correct, your grade is going to drop significantly. I would recommend him as a student advisor, but not necessarily as a teacher...

Definitely an outrageously tough grader!!! Even when you pour out all the information you know, it still never seems to be good enough. This guy is tough, but damn does he know his stuff. He is more then willing to help you on your papers or review sheets (Which he gives the answers to for every test). Just write your paper and go see him, trust me, it works. Just write what he says in class, even little stuff they tended to be the MC on tests. He really is a good guy.

I had him last semester and it was just awful. He freaked out if you walked in a minute late because you disrupted his class. Lectures were boring and this is the first class I have ever fallen asleep in and I'm secondary ed. con. history major!!! He seriously is out to destroy your GPA...avoid at all cost

UGH this class is the bane of my existance! treats us like we're grads bent on becoming civ. war historians, which we aren't. grades insanely hard, expects you to go to his office for help which many commuters may find hard. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! he is out to destroy your gpa and make you feel like crap for it at the same time, so save yourself!

My advice to anyone considering taking him is to STAY AWAY! He is the WORST teacher that I have EVER had. I thought that the class would be interesting but he is very boring, and has no idea how to teach to people. Majority of the time I had no clue what he was talking about. Assigns tons of reading, but never discuss it. Only time i took notes was from guest speakers. Very scattered, goes on tangets, unorganized, mumbles, whispers, and expects perfection on papers and any work done. i have never gotten a D in my LIFE before getting a paper back from him in this class.
