Lena is such a chill person, and she really knows her stuff. She'll make you want to buy a one-way ticket to a Scandinavian country. You'll get to understand inside jokes about Finland. Her class was my favourite one to go to, and if you keep up with the readings and class discussions, the course is very straightforward. Amazing professor.

Lena is such a sweetheart! Her class is super fun and she offers to do fun stuff outside of class- like go watch Swedish movies at VIFF or celebrate Lucia together! Swedish is pretty similar to English so not that hard. She really wants everyone to pronounce everything Swedishly so if u try your best with that and do the homework/quizzes ur set!

Swedish with Lena was very enjoyable. She included lessons on Swedish culture within her course, which were interesting and fun. As well, students were given the opportunity to participate in Swedish events outside of class.

My mom's Swedish so I took this course because I needed to learn grammar and how to read Swedish. Lena is so supportive and always keeps the class exciting! She encourages you not just to learn the language but immerse yourself in the Swedish culture. Her quizzes and homework assignments are very clear and I would recommend this class to anyone!

Lena really cares for her students and will certainly make sure you are doing well in class and understand whatever the textbook requires you to know. She even gives you godis. But when it comes to actually explaining things, she can be a bit confusing. Sometimes you might feel as if she is avoiding to teach you too much Swedish...

Best language prof I've ever had. She loves that we've chose to study Swedish, and it reflects in her teaching. She has learned how to teach the language over the years based on student feedback, and I'm grateful for that experience. She's also good at explaining things in multiple ways if you don't understand. Her office hours are always helpful.

Taking Swedish with Lena has been one of the best things I've done at UBC. Such a relaxed and easy going atmosphere in the class and Lena has a wonderful personality. You will be charmed by her witty humour and the class activities are fun and engaging. Fair amount of hw and quizzes but there is lots of flexibility. Take Swedish!

Fantastic course! Professor Karlstrom has created a truly enjoyable reading list that she has paired with enjoyable in-class experiences to promote lively discussion and participation. Before even receiving any marks, I was glad to have taken this course. It's rare for a lit course to be so thoroughly enjoyable, while also so thought-provoking.

I HIGHLY recommend taking the 2nd year of Swedish w/ Lena. The first year is a great intro to the Swedish language where you learn the basics of grammar, pronunciation, etc, but in the 2nd year things really start to congeal and you leave the course feeling fluent! You learn so much and the class is really fun with a really fun group project.
