Had to write a total of 5 papers + presentations on these papers. No rubric or clear instruction. Grading is arbitrary (girl who was fluent got a B- while a girl who could barely speak french got an A). If you disagree with her opinion, you are wrong. She refuses any other interpretation. Don't take this class. You wont learn & get a bad grade

Prof Hawkes is an incredible choice for a French professor. As long as you go to class, show you care, and stay on top of the minimal homework, you'll be fine. There are a couple group oral presentations, but she gives you a good amount of class time to work on them. She also has a sense of humor, which is an added bonus.

She's a really nice lady! The only thing I have to complain about is the teaching style, which didn't really work for me. She just kind of talks at you and asks everybody questions, doesn't write very much on the board. Very few tests and quizzes, never checked homework once.

Madame Hawkes is an amazing spirit if you get to know her, very funny, loves to get to know her students. You can skip class and it really won't matter. She's always in a good mood, always willing to help students out. Tests were hard.. I always ended up studying hard and then nothing I studied for ended up on the test.

Took LF211! She was the sweetest. She won't call you out on your flaws when you participate. She's very gentle about correcting. All you have to do to get an A? Show up to classes, do the reading assigned, put your hand up in class Scoring on the compositions is so easy. Just go to her office hours. She'll give you exactly what you need to know.

She's incredibly helpful, understanding and friendly. You can do great if you attend classes, get your reading done and participate in class. I had her for both LF211 and LF212. Completely worth it.

She is rude, unclear, unwilling to help, and all I learned were curse words. She goes off topic and confuses everyone and is frustrated when you don't understand. Her tests are different than any homework and unclear. She takes off points for things you haven't learned yet. I was a french minor but then I took her class... she ruined it for me.

LF304 is the easiest French class I've ever taken. Professor Hawkes is an easy grader, super funny, and nice. She is helpful with answering questions, but sometimes is a bit confusing when she's teaching. We rarely use the grammar book, yet I still feel as though I'm learning a lot of useful, conversational French.

I love her! She is a great teacher, and such a funny person. Her class is really quite easy. I hardly studied and got straight A's. She also grades so leniently on compositions; she will give back all the points you lost, so most of the class got 100's on compositions. She's very nice, too.

Prof. Hawkes is a fantastic teacher! She speaks only French in class, and thus develops your fluency. She has a lot of funny French anecdotes and 15 mins don't go by without her saying 'merde'. Super helpful at office hours and after class, h/w wasn't checked ever but should be done if you don't want to be lost in class. Graded quizzes & papers.

She is amazing. This class was really easy (I studied pretty much an hour before each test, including the final), but she made everything very interesting. Plus if you are having a hard time she is more than willing to stay late to help you!

Very kind. Makes sure everyone understands what she is explaining in French. Go to office hrs., she will explain things in English! Fair workload, mostly readings, but studying for quizzes is a must... She creates a very friendly, comfortable class environment, so that speaking is not intimidating and participation is easy!

Hawkes is the best French professor at BU!! I love her so much that I'm taking her again next semester. She's crazy, but in the best way, and loves to teach. She's funny, engaging, helpful, and will really teach you French; my speaking improved more than ever. If you need extra help, she'll make time for you outside her reg office hours. Take her!!

One of my favorite professors at BU! She assigns a lot of reading and expects you to actually be fluent enough in French to do it but will always help you out if you cant. She LOVES participation so speak up!!I would highly suggest this class to anyone who wants to learn a lot in french...you'll learn some nice curses too from her.

She is the best professor ever. She is really funny and is really interested in making French fun. I studied the night before every test and still did well. I hadn't taken French in two years before this class and I still felt like she went at a pace that I could follow. If you have to take French, take it with her.

Good teacher. If you are very interested in improving your fluency, take the class with her. She makes class very interesting and grades are based heavily on your improvement over the semester. Additionally, she'll teach you a lot of french slang.
