Best SW professor in the program. Makes her students critically think and reflect on their power/privilege. If you have the opportunity to take Professor O, please do so. Social work students at GV NEED to be challenged so they can realize how they perpetuate oppressive systems. Professor O will help you become a better human being.

Only take her if you're open-minded-only go into social work if you're open minded! Prof O is my most memorable teacher from the MSW program. She is blunt, but caring and experienced and anyone who has the privilege to learn anything from her should consider themselves LUCKY! She is the definition of SOCIAL WORK.

The BEST PROFESSOR!! She takes social work serious and very knowledgeable!! She gives insight to Caucasians and those that are oblivious to real life situations. She has taught me so much about myself and this world! She has high expectations and actually cares! Do not take her if you really do not want to learn and do the work!

I loved this woman-has a lot of life experience to pass along.  She is a very straight forward and no bs kind of woman and I can see how that may offend some.  She is quite funny but doesn't always stay on topic, but made a LONG class session palatable. Would have appreciated classtime support for emotionally difficult papers that were assigned.

Planned China trip to occur during semester-required deadlines moved up a month! Fun in class, but wasted too much time talking about elections; made it clear that only liberal opinions of interest; allowed class to make disparaging comments about religions. Caring; available via email. Grading silly-same points for a major project as for journal.

Open to all opinion, even those she disagrees with. But, wastes time in class reading from the book, and her assignments are often unclear. Her test questions are sometimes incomprehensible. Very fair and flexible. Has alot of class excercises.

Owens may be well respected at GVSU but I was not impressed!! She changed the syllabus randomly, wouldn't explain her grading on assignments and wasted TONS of time in class talking about nothing. I didn't learn a thing!! I avoid taking her now despite how much everyone seems to 'love' her!
