Regardless of what students think about her teaching (some people will like, some won't, regardless of how one teaches), this lady is BRILLIANT. Read her recent articles on stereoscopic images of women or her paper on resistive, authentic performances of Appalachian music. She is NO JOKE in the intellectual/scholarly category. I adore her work.

I am nearing completion of the music major and have taken almost every class taught by Hamessley. She is pathetic. Poor teacher, NOT very knowlegable, and is simple-minded. The only positive out of finishing up her courses is that I will never have to learn (assuming that I did learn something) from her again.

Professor Hamessley is always helpful and knowledgable, and she connects well with students. I could never be sure what would appear on her tests, and she required concerts and numerous "additional listening" assignments. Yet she teaches well, and hands-on performance of the gamelan and the African drums made the course much more interesting.

Lydia is tough! She demands a lot from her students, but you get a lot of of the classes. I loved playing gamelan... especially when we made offerings to the gong after dinner... ;)
