Comment:

One of my favourite professors at UBC. She often draws from her experience as a clinician and this really adds texture to the lectures. She also has a great dry sense of humour. It's easy to tell that she cares about her students succeeding and the evaluation is quite fair.

Hardest class class I have taken at UBC. You have to make sure to jot down all you can during lecture. Lecture heavy.

Comment:

Prof. Alden is an experienced clinician and truly inspirational. I enjoyed going to classes because she made them so interesting. It's pretty content heavy though- be ready to read the big, thick textbook with tiny fonts. Could be quite painful to memorize all the nitty gritty details about every mental illnesses still I'd recommend this course.

2 Midterms + Final that focused both in lecture AND book, but still possible to do well if you don't find memorizing details to be tedious. Lectures were interesting because she had a lot of experience dealing with different clients.

Comment:

Depressing class. The whole class is based on categorizing people who are mentally ill. Maybe it was the way she lectures; nonetheless, I found her biased and judgemental whenever she talked about her clients. It was my least favourite psychology class. The reason why her multiple choices are a grade killer is b/c they are worth 2 marks each.

Dr. Alden is a phenomenal lecturer. Lectures are so interesting it was like entertainment!!. She is a prominent scholar + practitioner and she has this class down to a fine art. You really need to read the text closely and go to all lectures and take excellent notes. Exams are challenging. She is very kind, very smart, + approacheable. Impressed!!

Notes unclear. She puts titles of theories etc. in but doesn't define it in notes. You must be there to hear her explain it. On tests she uses obscure questions for the big points, but makes the actual course material 1 pt each on mc. Eat your texbook; 11SO MUCH READING. quote from her "read the TB twice" GPA gone.

Holy.. hardest class of my life. She does not go easy on the textbook. She pretty much tells you you don't have to attend class but make sure to live and breathe the textbook. Also, the tests are hard.. Take it, if you dare.

Lynn is clear and seems to know her stuff but this class is ridiculously hard. Don't expect her help, she's very busy. First time I've ever received a poor grade. Hardest class I've ever taken. Ridiculous amount of information to study. This course turned me off Psych. Wish I never took this course, my poor GPA...

This course is a GPA killer! Dr. Alden is very busy with her research, and has little time to assist students who may be struggling. Course is very dense and there is only a midterm (45%) and a final exam (55%). She gives very difficult exams so if you get stressed or anxious in exams don't take her course, you'll end up in her anxiety clinic!

Lynn is amazing! She makes the class so interesting and the time flies. For this class, I didn't need the text much, but it was definitely needed for her 300 class! The way she teaches makes the material seem so obvious and if you're paying attention, you don't really need to study :)

Lynn is a great teacher. She is very engaging and entertaining. You must attend class but she makes it easy. However, there is a lot of reading needed for her class and you must know all details from lecture and text. If you can put the time into the class I recommend it. If you put in the effort you will get a lot out of this class.

Awesome prof. Very knowledgeable and passionate in the subject matter. Definitely knows her stuff. As long as you attend class( mandatory as she doesn't post up her powerpoint slides) and read the text you'll do fine. I got an A+ on both midterms doing just that.Very straightforward exams. AMAZING prof!!! one of the best profs I've had~ she made the course very interesting and inspiring. She doesn't post up notes online, and you will need to go to her lectures to TYPE out notes, but you will get A LOT out of her lectures!!! She is an experienced clinician and her stories are entertaining~ =) highly highly recommend it!!!
