Cioppa is smart-- no debate there. The problem is that she's so caught up in her research that it seems like she's never taken the time to sit down and think about how teach effectively. She acts as if students know the material already, leading to widespread confusion requiring enormous amounts of clarification.

Looking at the course description, I thought "Natural Hazards and Disasters! That sounds fun!" But she found a way to make it insanely boring. Best parts of class were when she fell down the stairs during the final exam and when she called campus police on two girls who were talking.

Prof. Cioppa is very helpful and caring. She explains material thoroughly and genuinely cares about her students. I also had her for fieldcamp and yes she is demanding in terms of material and assignments, but she is a very good prof and I learned alot from both of her courses.

Not a helpful prof at all! Seems easy since she gives you midterm outlines, but it would have been good if anything that was on the outline was on the midterm and exam. She just reads off the slides word for word and if you need help she tells you to refer to the text book. OUCH
