Comment:

Mark is one of RISDs best professors in that he doesnt feel he has to assign an excessive amount of work to motivate students. He gives you ample time to see a project through and encourages experimentation. His class has a great crit vibe, always constructive. He never allows people to bring personal issues into class time. And hes a riot.

Very fun, great guy. Enthusiastic. Jokes that will make your eyes roll back in your head. A little too easy-going, but as long as you put in effort and show you care about your work he will probably like it. Lots of gouache assignments, but you can honestly get away with anything as long as you put effort in.

Very perceptive and doesn't bs you with crit, tho he makes silly jokes a lot. Maybe too soft sometimes. Open-minded and tends to like everyone's work as long as they tried- as bad as you think you've done he'll always have something positive to say, but will call people out on bs. Very funny and pleasant, too. Might have you do some programming.

He doesn't look like a teacher at all, but he's fun and he likes to joke around with his students. I found his class pretty easy and relaxing and actually got a good grade. Important to know how to use color and GOUACHE!! Just do your best on your homework and you will be fine.

Gives excellent advice about color & design (seriously - pay attention and your compositions will improve). He's not at all narrowminded if you can intelligently justify your thought processes. One of the more demanding 2D profs. but worth it - be receptive. Does play favorites a bit - just make a good first impression with the initial assignment.

He's funny like a Santa that tells bad jokes. Tries to keep up with technology. Jolly. Good at personal commentary, he's very elaborative and florid in his use of language to describe art; taste, touch, smell, sound were all woven into his descriptions of visual artwork. It seems like any decent amount of effort and creativity will net you an A.

the only bad thing about mark is that he is a bit self conscience about the fact that he is old. he wants very much to be in touch with what is young and new in the art world which makes him slightly bias twards trendy methods of doing things but he is a brillant teacher in every other respect and you will learn loads from him. he makes charming silly bad jokes, and you will walk out of his class knowing more about compasition than you ever thought possible.
