Theres a good reason why CS at ASU has a very high drop out rate after Data Structures. Its because hes the only person who teaches it.

Mr. Motl is rather monotone and frequently sounds like he is whispering. You'll learn some CS, but it will be mostly because of the multiple labs that are due every class.

Comment:

Very smart, likeable guy. As a person I think he's great, but he is a very hard professor to take. If you have a choice between him and Legrande, I would choose Legrande, but Motl will for sure teach you everything you need to know, it is just very easy to get sidetract because of the nature of the subject matter and he's very softspoken.

He is a very smart professor who knows the material thoroughly, but he makes an assumption that each student is already a pro in computer science and should know things that arent taught yet. Gives WAY too many labs to do, 6 or 7 different programs due in one week, each week. Very hard material that is not explained thoroughly and moves on too fast

He knows his stuff, but his lectures are boring and sometimes difficult to understand. His tests come straight from the lectures so make sure you go to class every time. Definitely find time to visit him outside class because he is very helpful one-on-one. He is a very strict grader.

He's really smart and he knows what he teaches, but he doesn't know how to teach he is talking to his self half the time, and he stops in the middle of a topic and goes to another. DON'T BUY A TEXTBOOK - WASTE OF MY MONEY he doesn't even tech from the textbook.

Very intelligent Professor. If you don't go to class, expect to not do so well on his tests. He definitely tests to see if you were paying attention to him or not. On the other hand, I've never learned so much from another professor. Amazing if you really want to learn something in Computer Science.

Do you want to know if you have what it takes to be a good programmer? Take Dr. Motl. I had him for multiple CS courses from 06-09. While the courses were certainly tough, you walk away learning a lot if you put in the effort. Yes, like most programmers, he is a little peculiar. But he is very helpful and cares if it's clear you want to do well.

He will not help you when you ask him a question, he is not approachable, and the reason he has a high drop rate is because it is hard to learn from a teacher that doesn't teach very well. For a final comment, if you are taking this course then don't bother buying the book because almost everything he teaches is not in the book

I took his class ~1991, Dr. Motl's first year teaching at ASU. Apparently he hasn't changed a bit. Very challenging, intelligent, well spoken, precise, and helpful. And did I mention challenging? The drop rate for his courses was >50% way back then, too.

I think that if he actually helped when I had a question I would have learned something but any time I asked him a question he would tell me to go ask someone else who was doing better in the class. P.S. Class size shrunk from 22 students to only 9 students by the end of the semester. I advise not taking a course from this instructor.

The great thing about this teacher is that he makes you work for your grade. Yes he is tough, but I know that if I take this professor I am going to learn. The best part is that he goes at his own pace, which forces you to start teaching yourself. Personally I would take this professor any time.

One word, Silly... This was a Freshman course... think again Sr level or higher would be more like it. The book worthless because he teaches well outside of what the course is supposed to entail. 64 programing assignments... Yes they are small but 2 to 4 every day... He wants you to master C++ not learn and build... Test are off the wall hard

He has a temper. I've had had him for several classes (4 I think). Someone usually gets yelled at,(not me) for usually stupid reasons if front of the class. Mans a genius, he demands the best out of his class. Don't take him if you don't want to learn anything.
