Ok so I just randomly am on this site. Itook this professors class in 2000!!! And i am just on here now posting this because i ended up on this site and the first person i thought to look up was him and he is AWESOME!! I am honestly amazed to see that he is still teaching or at least has recently. This guy is awesome. Two thumbs up i still remember

Mark Schumaker really cares about his students, almost to a fault. Responding to a rating on this very website, he CHANGED WHICH HAND he writes with. I can see how frustrated this makes him, but he forges through for the good of his students. Awesome guy, he makes me proud to be a Coug.

Comment:

If you have a good grasp of the things you learned in Calculus 1, attend every lecture, and do most of the homework, then you will receive a passing grade. The only thing I could see as a threat to someone not passing, given you understand the material, is the homework.

Good lecturer, and fixed his hand thing, so overall very good. Nice guy also and you can tell he puts in a lot of work to make it so that you can do well if you try hard enough.

He is not very thorough when it comes to lecture. Personally I learned a lot more from my TA than I did from him. All I can say is say is that you will do well on your first two exams if you did well in calculus 1, although the last two exam were pretty difficult for both my friends and I. Good luck and study a lot if you really want an A.

Schumaker is a good math professor. His lectures are clear and he writes his notes on the doc camera so he doesn't go through the material too quickly. He's a cute old man who has a passion for math and I can tell how much he likes calculus in his lectures. I was amazed when I was actually understanding what was going on in class!

Comment:

Lectures are long and boring and very annoying. He writes out all of his notes during the class, but he is left handed so he not only covers up his notes with his hand he also smears his already terrible handwriting to make it look even worse and barley readable. He is on a set schedule so rushes through material. You have to learn it by yourself.

I selected lectures are long as a tag even though the class is only 60 minute sessions. Dr. Schumaker does not attempt to make the classroom a place where laughter or open discussion are usual. Expect his hand to be covering notes the majority of lecture as he chuckles about his occasional writing errors. He is a nice person.

Pick a different professor while you have the chance. I had a pretty good grasp on the concepts, but his tests were often time confusing on what they were asking for. I did fairly well in this class but with a different teacher I think I could have done better. By the way, the labs aren't a cakewalk anymore.

One of the worst instructors I have had. He may be a brilliant mathematician, but he is not a gifted as a teacher. It's pretty bad when other students have to answer questions for him. Works very examples in class, pre-types lecture notes in a font so small you can't read them on the projector. Learning Catalytics is a joke -- huge waste of time.

Interesting professor. You can tell he just wants to give his lecture and leave, doesn't really give a poo about students. But despite that it is pretty funny, he will say something like "you should already know this", and then, given that most the kids in the class hate math, everyone sighs and moans, but you can tell he gets a kick out of it.

This professor is absolutely terrible when it comes to lectures. I wake up early in the morning to go to Todd hall for story time, guess what he's reading? The Book. He just stands there and reads pieces of paper and already worked out problems. He doesn't go at a speed you can take notes at and is unclear.

Had him for Math 171. Extremely boring and his lectures didn't seem particularly helpful. If you didn't take calculus in high school, I definitely wouldn't count on him to re-teach you. Online homework was nice. Lots of chances to get a high grade. WolframAlpha (website) will help if you're stuck!

His lectures are really boring, and only some of the information he presents is helpful, which caused me to space out a lot. If you haven't taken calc before, you should attend lectures even if you have a good TA.
