Comment:

Art History majors seminar - 60%10 page paper, 40%participation and 3 presentations (1 group-based on readings, 2 individual- based on paper topic). Great at leading discussion (& trying to curtail the more overly enthusiastic talkers). Knowledgeable & sensitive to presentation anxiety many of us have. Kept saying she might retire soon?

Good prof, make sure you attend the lectures so you don't miss anything. Wish sometimes more emphasis would be put on what is important cause sometimes there's a wall of info and you only use a little of it on exams. But very good lectures, very knowledgeable and funny. Would take courses with her again!

her lectures are not too bad. sometimes boring and repetitive, but what I hated the most was her grading. as a non-arts major, the harder I tried for the exams and the paper, the more disappointed I'd get. extremely detail oriented. though I did learn a lot.

Comment:

Maureen is a good teacher. Her lectures are interesting but she tends to repeat herself and her slides are somewhat chaotic. Other than that she transmits her love for art history and assigns very relevant (and substantial) readings. The tests are not hard.

you have to take a class with her at least once in your life!!! she totally make herself like a ROCK STAR!!!! she would make the midterm and TA twice just to make everything fair. She something expect more than you think which is good. you can easy b+ if u go to her lecture, and easy A if you study.

Truly one of the most compassionate and passionate art history profs I've ever taken at UBC. You can tell she has a great knowledge of the subject matter, and she makes it incredibly easy to want to show up to class and actually listen. Great lecturer and cares deeply about her students.

easy to approach, always willing to answer questions through email. she hosts exam reviews AFTER the classes are over where she goes through the image list to talk about main points and answered questions even tho there were only 10-20ppl who attended. not sure if she does this every year, i took it in 2013. TAs kinda ruined the course tho

the prof makes the course easy to pass, but has an idiosyncratic personality which at times makes it hard to pay attention. the TA's are smug and say things like "i don't want you to call art beautiful." ratemyprofessor is also discussed in class. enjoy haha

Wastes time talking about wasting time. Textbook useless. The TA portions were useful but the lectures were boring and repetitive. To get a good mark, you just need to learn exactly what she says, no outside thought is required or even desired.

Prof Ryan was amongst my favourite professors this year! Going to class was a pleasure because of the movie theatre atmosphere, glow of the paintings on the projector, and engaging lectures from Prof Ryan. In order to minimize exam stress, Prof Ryan posted a shortened study list well before exams which made studying a breeze! TAKE THIS CLASS!

This course was much too easy for a university class. Maureen only made a slide list with 15 slides on it for a midterm exam. Contrary to other posters, the textbook was useful and the majority of slides covered in the lectures are also dealt with in the textbook. I'm uncertain how you could have passed the course without consulting the text.

Awesome prof- I love her obvious passion and enthusiasm and look forward to her lectures because she's engaged and always makes the material interesting. Yes it's a lot of work but she's nice and super helpful- if you are interested in art I would definitely recommend this course.

I agree about the textbook. I forced myself to look through it for tests and whatnot, but in the end it probably was the most useless thing I've spent 100 dollars on. I have mixed feelings about this course. If you really enjoy Art History, you'll be fine. If not, don't bother.
