Comment:

Most badly curated class I have taken at York. Prof is consistently rude & unhelpful; his lectures ramble, his tests are extreme, and he does not make a single accommodation for students with different learning abilities. No laptops in class. If you are 5 minutes late, he will not let you in. Do yourself a favor and skip this nightmare of a course.

Just don't do it. Don't take class with him. He refused to be accommodating to students when it comes to helping improve grades. He doesn't provide office hours freely. Expects you to read a 500page book within a week for a quiz that does not relate to anything in it. He also is very unclear with his grading scheme. Extremely drops GPA. Don't do it

Had him for both HIST2110 and 3110. By far the hardest prof I've ever had. He's so unclear and I'm not sure what to even study for half the time. I got extremely lucky with my mark because Middle Eastern history is something that I'm really interested in. If you're not interested in this subject, take Russian history. Its much easier.

He's the cutest thing ever. So sweet and kind when you talk to him in person. His tests are unpredictable because anything he says and does will be in the lecture. I had no idea how to study for his tests. I bombed his class with a D-. He knew I worked hard so passed me. Take an easier class, I got B's in all my other history classes.

Definitely the hardest course I have taken at York. There are only 6 quizzes based on any word he may have mentioned in class or in the readings and spelling counts. Readings are long, unclear and boring. Everyone was freaked out going into the exam, despite studying you never knew what to expect. Don't take the class save yourself the stress.

Professor Maidman can be considered an old school teacher, but that was what I liked about him . If you came to his lectures, read the readings, took notes and studied, you should have received a decent grade. He is very knowledgeable about his field of study, and I felt like I actually was learning something. He may be hard, but it is worth it.

Well, he's not a real charming prof, and that's about it, really hard course and his helpfulness is horrible, YOU DO NOT WANT TO TAKE THIS COURSE, Take another course. :)

If you want to pass attend the lectures and do the readings!!! i took this for my elective cause i was interested in the subject did not know what i was signing up for. He is clear and will help if you ask him but he is a very hard marker and will deduct marks for spelling and grammar. if you can manage the readings and like the subject take it.

His class may be a lot of work, but it is completely worth it. I have taken all of his courses and enjoy his classes very much. You must do all your readings and take very good notes if you wish to do well. Write down everything he writes on the board and pay attention to the names to the pictures he shows these names would appear for your tests.

Don't choose this prof if you are looking for something easy. Only choose him if you love what you are about to study. He loves the subject, and if you love it too then his way of teaching will inspire you. Some call him old school, he may be a little, but he is an extremely intelligent man. The only Assyriologist in Canada

Unlike most reviewers looking for a bird course and upset they found a History professor who teaches using primary sources as the basis for lectures and encourages critical thinking; I think Maidman is fantastic. He's tough but fair and if you are interested and put the work in, you'll do great. He's much more engaging than the usual at York.

Do not skip unless you are very ill. Lectures are long and none of it is on moodle, slides used in class only show pictures and maps. Unless you have a friend in the class, you will not know what happened. Class consists of quizzes and two exams. Tests are defining 20 random words from each unit, difficult to study for. He is very unclear at times.

In the 90s I took a survey course with him, and in 3rd year and he gave a C. I was so pissed off that I took his 4th year selected problems course to prove myself. I got an A , and the experience was a turning point for me. I went on to graduate school, and am now a senior university administrator...sometimes hard knocks (academic styles) works...
