He is a very good teacher, he goes in depth into the subject of the history of the rich and does his best to be both humorous as well as knowledgeable. He does both very well, but lectures can get boring. There are lots of readings attached to each class but honestly as long as you pay attention in class and take good notes you will be just fine.

Great teacher, the class I took (History of the Rich) was very interesting. The class is mostly reading based, normally one quiz every two class periods over readings, one small project done in the class, midterm and final happen earlier than other classes, teacher is funny, lectures can sometimes be dull, class sometimes ends early. Good overall.

This was McGerr's first year teaching "The Rich", he adjusted the syllabus half-way through to give us a lesser workload. I mean, you can tell he actually wants you to do well. This class has a LOT of readings, but if you pay attention in class, you can do well on the quizzes. He prepares you well for the midterm and final.

I really enjoyed the content of this course and Professor McGerr. I think he is a funny guy and a great teacher. Attendance is a heavy part of your grade, which helps your grade if you show up. There is an optional extra credit paper that adds up to extra 40 points of your grade. No book, no final, 3 tests, and 3 required papers, 1 optional paper

He is possibly the best professor I've ever had the pleasure of being in the same room as. He is so understanding and nice, plus hilarious as heck. I accidentally mixed up 2 writing assignments thinking they were the same because the prompts were very similar, and he let me turn it in late and still gave me a good grade, bless his heart.

I took his Big Business class and It was a lot more interesting than I expected. I am a history minor and I took it primarily just to get my last history credit. Prof McGerr is very entertaining and knowledgeable. As long as you do the work & look over the powerpoints before tests you will do fine. Also the extra credit he gives is worth doing.

Prof. McGerr is one of the best profs at IU. He really gets into lectures and makes them funny and enjoyable. Do some of the readings and any extra credit he gives and you'll walk out with an A.

McGerr is awesome! One of my favorite professors at IU. He is a very knowledgable historian and helpful professor. Very sweet guy. His letters are long but very interesting. Highly recommended if you love American hist in 20C. I have taken two classes with him. I hope i can take one more. And his AIs are very easy graders.

I don't know why Professor McGerr has such a high rating. He's a harsh and slow grader, he's smug and condescending, and he finds himself far more entertaining than he actually is. I was excited going into this class, but it ended up being so dry. His lectures are organized, and he does offer extra credit, but one of the worst classes i've taken

An amazing lecturer & keeps class very interesting. This is my second class with him and I have truly loved both. I was warned to not go to office hours because he isn't the friendliest and found that to be true. He was condescending & seemed very annoyed that I was there. It's a shame, being that he seems like he would be a cool dude to chat with.

best professor at IU. He's the reason I added a history degree. Hilarious if you have a dry sense of humor. not necessarily an easy class, but interesting enough that you'll do a bit of work to get the A

He was an amazing lecturer and really cares about his students! He has an amazing wit to keep class going, interesting, fun, and exciting. He knows his stuff when it comes to history. He also loves meeting students when they come to his office hours and as well just talking about things in general. Overall, one of my favorite professors at IU.

What can I say about Professor McGerr. He is one of the most interesting professors I have had at IU. Lectures are rarely boring and he uses dry humor to keep the class's attention. Show up to class (he takes attendance and points are given), do the assignments, and study some and you will get an A.

McGerr cares about his students, and whether or not they develop important skills, such as critical thinking, rather than straight memorization. He clearly lays out an argument in his lectures--which are often laced with humor--and encourages students to develop their own. TA's grade coursework, but they were fair graders & available for consult.

Students should feel honored to take this class. McGerr is a world class historian. He is fair, inspiring, and full of knowledge. His lectures are thorough and cover material that music lovers will never knew existed. He will open your eyes to music you would have never listened to without his class. Don't hesitate to take this class.

Fun lectures. Uses humor and wit to keep you listening. Graders and tests (all essay based, out of class) were a pain. Has an excellent theory that students at other schools and in different majors get A's too easily, so he curves the class and offers attendance points.
