Comment:
Prof. Miller is a dry speaker but he makes his notes available online (which is handy in case you zone out and miss a section). He is very helpful though, and would stay after lectures to answer questions and help with assignments.

Lectures are slightly dry (seriously, it's a programming course), but he knows his stuff, and, contrary to what some people seem to think, doesn't assume you know any programming. First few classes are intimidating because of the sheer amount of code, but Miller is fair and helpful in office hours especially. Textbook is useless, save your money

Really good instructor. He used to be UVic's Dean of Engineering. CSC 111 had a bit of an inverse bell curve, but that's not his fault - that happens every year. Students either excel in that course or do poorly. C is *the* single most important programming language for CEng & EE, so failing those who blew the course off is entirely reasonable.

Awesome computer science prof. Super knowledgable. I'd ECTIONlike to point out most of his negative reviews are for csc 111. Perhaps if more 17 year old boys in engineering spent more time doing the readings ahead of time, instead of getting wasted, they would have done well in this course, and been able to follow the lectures.

He's very boring. I sometimes didn't bother going to the lectures but the labs were very helpful. Overall the course was fun.

Comment:
Relies too much on lectures slides and puts code that can't even compile in his examples. His lectures are dry and he expects us to already know code. Explanations are poor, and I definitely learned way more reading out of the textbook myself than attending his pointless lectures.

Miller knows his stuff, but he is not the greatest teacher. He is great during office hours and is very fair, but don't bother with his lectures, or the textbook for that matter as you'll never use it. He has a ridiculous amount of slides, just read them, you'll learn enough.

His lectures are completely 100% pointless. No one would bother showing up for lectures because no one could learn from his slides and no one could stand his monotonous voice. Only way to learn in this class is from the lab sections

Strongly disagree with other comments. I went in without having done ANY programming whatsoever and came out with an easy A+. He doesn't not assume you already know C(from CSC 111). If anything I thought he went too slow. The class was too easy. Either way though he is well prepared for lectures and is quite helpful. Really nice guy too.

Horrible slides. Doesn't show how any of his code actually outputs, just stands there and explains in words, expecting you to know what he's talking about. Level of midterm was deceiving to level of difficulty to the final. Basically teaches to students who have a background in programming, not good at all for newcomers.

Had CSC 111 (the engineering one) with him. It's obvious that he's knowledgeable but does not know how to pass it on. A NIGHTMARE if you haven't done programming before. Assumes you know C already.

Comment:
Slides are incomprehensible, assumes the class knows everything and is then surprised when the class struggles on an assignment. Apparently he feels that throwing around technical terms is the best way to teach something. I have a midterm in 2 days and don't know what is going on.
