Comment:

Lectures are long; however, he does post the PowerPoints online, and I successfully used them to study for exams. His labs are done inside a Linux VM, so if you've never worked with a terminal, it's good practice. Overall a very fun course, homework is minimal, only two exams, labs were well run, and it actually made me want to study for my CCENT.

You're pretty much on your own. EVERYTHING is so ambiguous and vague that you never know what is expected of you. Assignments are so far from topics taught that they might as well be from another class. Very bad professor; he can't do his own examples most of the time. Never explains anything so you have to find out for yourself (even exams) AVOID!

I took his class thinking it would be a fun and easy general course, but boy was I wrong, the instructions for each assignment are vague, lectures are very boring, the professor expects you to know everything about the material although his power points are practically useless, and tests are hard. Nice guy but horrible professor.

Several times you asked for help and the professor himself didn't know how to solve whatever problem you had. Tests were a lot of quizz questions and he gave "example questions" in the exam review.

Intelligent teacher, knows his material. Labs are VERY ambiguous and take many hours to complete. Olan's lectures are not very helpful, so be prepared for out of class research. Tests are extremely difficult, Olan expects you to know the subject inside and out

He typically assigns assignments that frequently require self-research and lots of time spent. Continually vague on most assignments and sometimes during lectures, which you must ask or research to get an answer. Dry and sleep-inducing lectures though attendance not mandatory. In-class tests are typically extremely difficult, though he does curve.

Super nice guy..We learned a lot more about under developed countries than i liked rather than new technologies but for the most part i learned a lot. No textbook meets 1 day a week and you do the work in class, you can't ask for more. Best class i have taken at Stockton so far Olan is the man!

Really nice guy, however, the class was extremely boring and repetitive. Weekly quizzes. Easy powerpoint project at the end you can do in groups. Just would've been better if the class was actually engaged in some way to the material.

His lectures are most worthless of all. Other than that this guy is very knowledgeable in whatever he is teaching. Will let you submit an assignment lately, if you could not finish on time. He does that kind of favor occasionally. Lab is extremely hard even when you will work in a group. His worthless, dry lecture also is responsible for that.

hes a very boring teacher. he knows his stuff, but he doesnt know how to teach it. he talks forever. we email him and ask him for help, and he doesnt help with our labs or questions we have. tells us to figure it out ourselves.

One of the best computer science teachers. Has a lot of knowldge in what he teaches. He posts the notes online and is very helpful with any problems you have. His higher level classes tend to do a good bit of work, but you will learn a lot of valuable information. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The class wasnt bad atin the beginning, about half way through I had two court dates during which we had a test and Iemailed him about it. He would not let me make up the test and gave me a zero on it. Needless to say I failed the class because It was so late in the semester I could not withdraw. I had about a B average before that test.

I took a 4000 level class when he was new to Stockton. The class started with 45 or so students and ended up with around a dozen in the end. It was very hard, but we learned a lot. It's a shame I only got one class with him.

Absolutely painful class to get through although he does make sure everyone gets through. His lectures are about as boring as watching golf or the grass grow(pick your poison). Labs are not very clear on what he wants you to do. Tests were easy to moderate.

Great teacher. Knows the subject matter very well. He will try to help you all along the way. His tests are easy for some, hard for others. If you study and do the work he recommends, you can easily get an A.
