Comment:
Qualls is by far the best CSIS teacher I've had at Grossmont. Though I found the work to be extremely difficult, he was never afraid to write impromptu code on the board to help in my understanding. His tests are open book, and everything comes straight from the book! So read! Overall, an excellent professor.

Mike is a good guy and positive and energetic. Homework and tests are easy. Unfortunately, he defers questions to other students - it's a toss up whether that's his teaching style or he just doesn't know the answers, even to simple questions about the power points.

Great guy, very much enjoy his personality. He knows Java very well and can really give you insight into data structures and how they work. He's very lenient and helpful if you ask him questions or for guidance.

Great guy and great class. It is not the easiest class to take but a little work and you will get an A. Some tutoring will go a long way. Take him!

If you want an easy A then Qualls is for you. He has very low standards when it comes to coding. Students can get away with turning in the most horrible looking code! His lectures are confusing because he just stands up there and talks but never writes anything on the board. People hardly ever show up to class and still get an A. I was disappointed

Professor Qualls does what he can to give you exemplary examples before giving you assignmentsprojects. If you don't read the book you probably won't succeed. Typically follows syllabus to a tee, and assignments are submitted via blackboard. If something unusual happens he is kind enough to extend some things. However, be prepared java ! ez

Email responses take a long time which can be irritating if you need a fast response, especially when it's hw related. U do need the book, especially if you don't have a strong prgm'g background (which I didn't). Also follow his structure on coding with the examples he gives you to get an A. Discussion boards are long but easy.

Professor Qualls is very professional, clear about his syllabus and following schedule, and gives good examples on Java programming. However, sometimes it can be difficult when asking a question.. Make sure you phrase it correctly. Professor Qualls is a logical person so you have to ask him the right questions, not be afraid to pry 4 the answer!

I gave 3 points for each fields due to online class. This class is fine to squeeze time to schedule classes, but advise: YOU NEED TO READ EVERY CHAPTERS FROM THE TEXTBOOK. There are no other methods to understand the materials in order to pass or get good grade on this class. 4 hws, 2 projects, mid/final exam. Taking late hw, but not exam Endup a A

I came into this class knowing nothing about Java and I managed an A. It took a lot of work and a lot of help from outside the classroom (The New Boston YouTube channel). Qualls is happy to help you with programs, however I think the subject is just hard to teach. Exams are tough. Programs aren't too bad, and are a majority of your grade.

DO NOT take an online Java course unless you already have knowledge of programming. I got nearly perfect grades on the midterm and two programming projects, but the final was so mind-boggling hard that I feared bombing it entirely. I'm a math major transferring to UCSD with a 3.95 GPA and this was hands down the hardest class I've ever taken.

CSIS 119 is an easy introductory class to programming. I did not have much communication with Prof. Qualls, but that was just fine as you should learn everything you need by reading the textbook. Read all the chapters and do the sample quizzes and you should be able to get an A on the midterm/final.

He doesn't really teach. We had class get out early. My suggestions is make friends in the class that know this stuff already and ask them for help

I can't help but feel that he doesn't know as much Java as he should. In Java 2 he wouldn't be able to answer half the questions we asked and he would regularly get corrected by his students. I thought the assignments were easy and his grading was even easier.

Easy class, He does a lot of talking, very little actual Java work. There isn't really homework, just a few projects and some extra credit. The midterm and final are both done on Blackboard, but if blackboard crashes you are out of luck because he doesn't do anything to help out. Quite a few people had issues but he left the scores as is.

Professor Qualls is not a good communicator. Such is the nature of programmers. He makes it too easy to be lazy by posting all the solutions to the assignments and not requiring you turn anything in except the projects. He grades very fairly and didn't mark me down for submitting a project half a day late. Self-motviation is necessary.

I thoroughly enjoy anything computer related and have had a huge interest in programming. I did pretty well in the class besides on the multiple choice part of the tests simply because I didn't study. The programming part of the test, I did well on. Projects difficult because certain content wasn't explained by him or book clearly.

I did well because I am a programmer. Others did not have such luck. He is often late to open up the class room. Most of the learning is completely up to you via reading the book. He will vaguely cover some examples and other code.
