I've had Dr. Machida for both stat method classes. He won't MAKE you write codes, but if you want to learn that he will teach you. In the majority of the class he tells you exactly what he wants and produces example reports so you can copy his style. Some people have issues with his accent, i've gotten used to it. He's a great teacher, and he cares

Comment:

I thoroughly enjoyed having Professor Machida for Statistical Methods I. He really knows his math, and rather than focus on making you memorize equations, he goes out of his way to make sure you have a concrete understanding of the principals he is teaching and how to interpret statistical data. I would highly recommend this course to anyone.

Very thick accent. I found I really had to pay attention to understand him. He's a very nice guy though. He will work with you on tardy work and often gave extensions on papers. If you can teach yourself and don't want to attend class, you'll do fine with this guy.

Great teacher, really knows his math, but his accent is a little thick. I speak japanese, so it's never been a problem for me, but other people complain that they can't understand him all the time. Personally, I think it's just because people at this school are too country.

I read these reviews before the class, big mistake. Machida is impossible to understand, a nervous wreck while teaching, and he is too smart for his own good. The only time he was helpful was when I went one-on-one.He is honestly the worst professor I have ever had. Do not take him! You HAVE to teach yourself, and his test aren't fair.

This class was EASY! Machida is a very nice and helpful professor. If you don't understand a concept simply ask him and he will go out of his way to make sure you do understand. For some people they may be a language barrier issue, but I didn't seem to have a problem with it. This class is computerized and you don't need the book.

Machida is very helpful and his class is very easy. If you are lazy or can't find time for his class you will not pass though. His accent is easy to understand unlike some other professors (cal-based physics prof. Ayik for example). Test are based from his quizzes.

this is a statistics class... however his accent is very heavy and his teaching ability is very low. if youre good at math you might do ok if youre not, FIND SOMEONE ELSE!!!

He was very helpful. He never made you feel stupid for asking questions and always kept his door open for anyone who wanted to talk or get extra help. The online quizzes were very essential as far as acing his tests. The tests are pretty much the quizzes, so just do the homework, go to class and ask questions, and you'll have an A.

It's calculus, so it's not going to be easy. Some people are saying he is hard to understand and that is true at times. All you have to do to understand is pay attention. The online quizes help a lot as well as help out your final grade. He devotes class time to going over the quizes so that you can get the highest possible grade.

Machida is hard to understand.. but if you know the material, the class is easy. He let me RETAKE the MIDTERM. I made a 50 on it, he let me retake the other classes test. It was nice, and I ended out with a B in the course even though I thought I might end with a C.

If you have had previous exposure to Calculus, then you may do okay. If you have a good understanding of Japanese, then you may do okay. If you are like me and speak only fluent English and have little time or energy to spend translating the instructor, you're screwed. I would say take someone that is a little more fluent in English.

Easiest Calculus class that I have ever taken. You have to pay close attention to what he is saying to understand his English. He pulls his test questions from the homework, but changes a number or sign. As long as you do the homework, you will do good. Easy class, take him if you want an easy A/B!

Matrix lab is easy. Dr. Machida is also very helpful on the rare occassions that you might have problems. He's somewhat hard to understand at times, though, since he has a fairly thick accent.
