Comment:
Graburn wasn't bad. He's actually really nice and throws in the occasional joke about turkeys who can't have sex. GSIs are everything in this class. I had Julani who was really laid back and great but my friend had Naomi (head GSI) and she was really picky. Switch out of her section if you have to.

Comment:
Prof. is slightly disorganized in lecture-kind of hard to follow. You'll have to keep up with readings to do well,& there's A LOT. It really all depends on your GSI. Arpita was the greatest, if she's still teaching. Don't take Naomi - switch sections, or you'll have a hard time. She's a hard grader, takes off .5 points for grammatical errors.....

Comment:
The lectures were really hard to follow. He uses excessive examples and is a bit disorganized. Although he can be funny, he can also be cranky. The class required way too much reading and your grade really depends on how hard your GSI is. I often loathed going to lecture.

This class felt like I was in highschool again. You graze over topics without really getting into the meanings behind them. The class basically consists of learning 2-3 sentence definitions for terms you probably already know the meaning of, then applying those terms loosely to the readings. I went to lecture maybe once a week, skipped about 5 sect

Graburn's lectures are drawn-out and boring. There's tons of difficult reading to do. I certainly would not recommend this class unless you must absolutely take it.

Prof. Graburn is extraordinarily knowledgeable about tourism studies and this is obvious is his clear, succinct presentations during the graduate seminar. Outside of class, he is very personable and helpful to students who share his research interests. He also has a wicked sense of humor!

Pretty boring. I took this class because my friends were taking this class. I will never use that as a determining factor in scheduling my classes again. The reading was OK, the lectures were boring, and the grading appeared to be based on grammar, rather than on content and knowledge of the material. I am very glad that it is over!

To everyone who finds him boring, I think Graburn is interesting and funny! Granted I didn't have Anthro3 with him, his upper division classes are pretty good. I also recommend 171. I learned a lot of interesting things, plu he is really helpful in office hours when you're trying to write a research paper for his class! There is a lot of reading...

Graburn is an interesting lecturer; it's obvious that he has extensive knowledge of multiple cultures. People who say that the class is boring must not be interested in cultural anthropology because his class and style of teaching ARE what make up cultural anthro.

Boring as hell class. Graburn is an odd fellow with his weird stories and his tales about his "Japanese wife." Like... you don't have to tell us over and over that your wife is Japanese. Also, please drop the odd references to Club Med. Reading is boring. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS.

Great lecturer! I took anthro3 with him and came back for more. Material is both interesting and thought-provoking and Dr G ties it all together culturally, historically and globally. Plus he has a sense of humor.
