Loved this class, Professor Hillmer lectures orally but he lays everything out it making it easy to follow. His lectures are interesting as he has many personal anecdotes to add to lecture content. Just show up to class and do the readings and the exam will be a breeze.

I would highly recommend HIST 3306. Every lecture was clear and concise, the course structure made it easy to tell what was important. The class was interesting and engaging, which can be difficult to achieve in a Canadian history course. The prof was extremely helpful and understanding toward students-take a class with Hillmer if possible.

HIST 3304 was an excellent course; dealing with Canada-US Relations, it goes into detail on the relationship between Canada and the United States, taking advantage of Professor Hillmer's detailed knowledge of the subject. I would definitely recommend this course; as long as you study and attend the classes the exam will not surprise you.

HIST 4915 was an amazing 4th yr seminar to take! North American relations are already worthwhile studying, but the current political climate makes the course material that much more engaging. Prof. Hillmer is so encouraging of students pursuing their interests and is really supportive throughout the course work & gives interesting readings!

Professor Hillmer is one of Carleton's greatest assets. He cares deeply about history and presents it in a way that brings historical figures and events to life. The exam is straightforward with no tricks and you will ace it if you study. The briefing note is practical and actually quite fun! TAKE HIM UP ON HIS OFFERS TO HELP - YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

The best. Not much more to say. Exam is extremely straight-forward; if you study the topics discussed in class, you will do fine. Lectures are incredible in their structure, content, and delivery. Even if you aren't into Canadian history, do whatever you can to take a class with Professor Hillmer.

Professor Hillmer is hands down the best professor I've had at Carleton. His lectures are interesting, the assignment is unique and he gives students a lot of guidance going into the exam. This class was twice a week at 8:30 in the morning and it was NOT an effort to go to this class. Take him up on his offers to help you, he is very approachable!

The lessons learned in this course go farther than impressive and interesting lessons on Canadian history. Prof. Hillmer's arguments at the beginning of each lecture and the methods he uses to prove his argument will help you to look at your own papers, research, etc., in this and other classes in new ways that will greatly improve your writing

Norman is a great lecturer who is clearly very passionate about Canadian history. Loved how he set up each lecture with an argument which he would try to prove to you by the end of the lecture and he welcomed being challenged. Very willing to help prepare for exam or with papers if needed. One warning: DONT TALK IN HIS CLASS HE WILL CALL YOU OUT.

The best prof I had at Carleton. I had an Intro Cnd History course with him in 1st year, & enjoyed it so much, I decided to double major in history. In subsequent years I chose courses because Hillmer taught them. I liked how he made each lecture a thesisessay that he argued, and it was interesting that he challenged us to argue against him.

Best lecturer: he is very clear and he structures his lectures like an essay. He is very helpful and will point you in the right direction for the assignments. I would 100% recommend taking his class. He made me interested in Canadian history, which I previously detested.

Simply the best prof I've ever had. However, if you're not interested in history might be hard to follow. Doesn't have slides, just gives out paper with terms and just talks. Gives a lot of choice for paper and exam. He is more than helpful out of class, he clearly wants students to learn and succeed. It was almost a privilege to take his class

Quite possibly the best professor at this school. Exceptional lecturing style, extremely helpful if you email or go to his office hours. Quite a charming sense of humour, particularly in relation to his very sad attempt at covering his massive partisan tendencies. Recommend any class with Prof Hillmer, elective or as part of your degree.

Best prof I have ever had at Carleton. Both the Briefing note and the exam were tough but if you put the work in you will get a good grade. He is very smart and knew a ton of politicians and tells funny stories about his experiences. I think he may have retired but if you get the chance to take a course with him - DO IT!

I took a class on Russian Canadian trade from Norm, Russ/Canuck trade in the 1930s which was measured in thousands of dollars and he made it seem so important and so interesting. He has the timing of a great comic and is sooooo smart.

Excellent prof for all the right reasons. At least in the course I took with him, on Canadian internationalism and nationalism, Dr. Hillmer is a highly-regarded expert and truly knows his stuff. That being said, very approachable, kind and humorous professor as well. Very willing to help students outside of class. A must! Others cant compare!

Very intelligent/witty, friendly, and a great lecturer. You will learn alot from his courses. Just as a heads up, his assignment usually requires alot of extensive research (Very specific topics) And unless you are *really* political-history savvy, missing classes regularly would be a big no no - lot's of detail to cover. Overall, superb proff!

I got an F and I still think it is one of the best I have ever taken. Hillmer is amazing! (Although I'm pretty sure he knows it.) Intimidating. Course was exam/1 assign. 50/50.You must go to the classes BUT trust me you want to. Attending a lecture is like going to story time. Don't get so caught up that you forget to take good notes.
