Some European History class, circa 1974. Wow, he's got a fantastic grasp of the realities behind the historical events...second best name ever too. I took 6 tough classes that semester, all tues/thurs so had 6 finals on one day! Aced Hoidal's class and 4 others.

He's now retired as of June 2008. But for the record: He refused to to assign a book that coorelates with the lecture and the lecture is what matters for the exams. Grades your book reports and exams on gramatical errors even though this is not a English class. Does not offer any extra credit. He's out of touch with students.

This class is driven on notes. Since there is no textbook, take the best notes that you possibly can. You will be tested three times during the year, all based on the notes he's given out in class. Modern Europe- The people who wrote bad things about Prof Hoidal obviously do not like the structure of history classes-there is a lot of furious note taking and all tests are essays. Hoidal is old-fashioned, but still has a sense of humor and an enormous amount of knowledge about history. I'm not a history major but I still loved his class.

This class was the hardest I've ever had. It is possible to get an "A" out of a Hoidal class but it requires a lot of note-taking, study, and memorization. Plan to study 2-3 hours a night for a week prior to midterms and final. Memorize the notes you take and includes days, not just years. You'll do okay if you follow these instructions.

I've had it will all of you babies who complain about Prof. Hoidal. He's the most brilliant professor at SDSU and you are lucky to be able to take a class with him. Yes, he's a tough grader, but maybe if you actually cared and worked hard, like he does, you would get good grades. This is a university, not a party, by the way.

He is very thorough which requires attendance and being attentive. Come on, were in college here, its not that hard. Hes very clear with what he demands and if you want a good grade you will get one. you cant skate by. The book reviews are what gets you though. be very thorough and just follow the instructions EXACTLY. any one want to buy a review on all quiet on the western front? i got a 97 . . . ;)

This guy is an awesome professor. Sure, he may be hard, but it helps you to study harder. I do agree, he is a little tough, though. He tries to get you to push yourself beyond your limits by grading hard. He's also a very bright man, excellent lecturer, well-read, extremely nice, etc. Still, don't let his funny accent fool you ;)
